Full disclosure: If you couldn't tell by my number of product reviews and seeing how I received the game for free, I am a backer of Aries from when it was on Indiegogo. Despite this, I feel it necessary to be completely honest while writing a review for it.
The game is in early access and has many features yet to be implemented and plenty of bugs. However, after playing the game for awhile, I can confidently say that in its current state, Aries is still fun and scratched that 4X strategy itch that I had for so long. I love the Total War series and Warhammer 40k and this game is like the combination of the two. I enjoyed both the space and the ground battles. I am also digging the steampunk-like aesthetic the game touts.
I have run into many bugs, which is very common for a Early Access game. However, what I have been most impressed with is how the developer keeps in contact with the community and how quickly bugs are fixed once brought forward. I have reported numerous bugs and he has responded personally to each bug report I sent in. The glitches are then typically fixed within a couple of days. He has been open to critiques, suggestions, and is probably been the most accessible developer I have ever bought a game from.
$29.99 does seem a little high for the game's current state. However, after seeing the constant updates and road map for the game's future, I think it is worth a buy. If you are like me and are eager to sink your teeth into a good 4X strategy game, then I highly recommend Aries.
