琳琳 is not a game, it's an e-book that's been dumped on Steam masquerading as a game. As a visual/interactive novel, this doesn't feature any notable gameplay, it's just a lot of clicking through badly written dialogue that would never have been accepted or published in print, which poses the question, "How did something this badly written end up on Steam?". When someone hoping to become an author is unable to get published in print, they spend $100 and dump their high school fan-fiction onto Steam, under the guise of a game. This garbage Choose Your Own Adventure e-book deals with child murder and abuse, which raises stern questions about the level of mental health of the "author" behind this. Although that is unrelated to the fact it was also dumped on mobile app stores. But what is relevant is that not only should you not want a non-game e-book in your Steam library, you shouldn't want mobile apps there either. Is your gaming rig with a 5090RTX in it an iPhone? No it isn't! Visual novels/e-books are tedious at best... imagine the best novel you ever read, be that Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy or 2001: A Space Odyssey or Twilight (if you have terrible taste in literature), but then translate that to a format where the words dribble out and you have to click your mouse every time you wanted to read the next sentence, instead of just turning the pages. You'd think it was garbage. Now imagine that experience, but with much worse writing (because if these guys could write professionally, they'd be published authors and this would be on shelves in bookstores, and they wouldn't have to pay Valve $100 to self-publish this on Steam), and you have your average Steam e-book. One of the chief problems with failed authors polluting Steam with non-game E-books is that E-books can easily just be presented in a web browser... there's no justification for charging money on Steam for what might as well be a webpage. We don't spend thousands on buying a gaming rig to spend money on Steam for something Chrome or Firefox could do. Even though this is "free", it failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the e-book peaked at just a dozen or so concurrent readers, and now there's basically nobody reading it. Even though it's free. This is a dismal public reception, but it's easy to see why gamers rejected it. While this E-book is "free", you can get better quality, professionally written books and comics for free online (from places like Project Gutenberg) or from public libraries. Steam isn't a comic book store, neither is it Netflix, it's for games. Your gaming rig is not a Kindle. It's impossible for me to recommend things to PC gamers that aren't really games.
琳琳 – A Heartfelt Masterpiece That Cuts to the Soul
Game Title: 琳琳 (Lin Lin) Developer/Publisher: 菠蘿 (Pineapple) / orange pineapple tea Release Date: November 11, 2022 Platforms: PC (Steam)

Introduction – A Chilling Tale Worth Exploring
Greetings, fellow adventurers of pixelated realms! It is I, Kiba Snowpaw, the Ice Wolf of HowlStrom, descending from frosty peaks to bring you an icy-hot take on a game that blends raw emotion with interactive fiction. 琳琳, or *Lin Lin*, is a visual novel that tackles heavy themes with elegance and sincerity, diving deep into domestic struggles through the lens of a mysterious and heart-wrenching story. This game isn’t just a narrative—it’s an experience. From its heart-pounding moments of discovery to its quiet reflections, 琳琳 takes you on a journey filled with choices, consequences, and an array of emotions that will leave your fur bristling and your tail wagging with anticipation.

Basic Plot Summary – A Cry in the Night
The story follows "I," a socially reclusive freelance illustrator with a troubled past. Living in a small apartment complex, the protagonist uses a mysterious superpower to observe the world from a safe distance. One fateful night, they hear distressing cries from Room F. The cries belong to Lin Lin, a young girl trapped in a cycle of abuse at the hands of her parents. Players are given three days to uncover the truth, navigate complex relationships with the neighbors, and decide Lin Lin’s fate. Your choices shape the narrative, resulting in multiple endings ranging from heartwarming to devastating. This layered storytelling ensures that every playthrough feels fresh and meaningful.

Originality – A Genre-Defining Narrative
琳琳 sets itself apart by seamlessly blending visual novel mechanics with investigatory gameplay. The use of a superpower to uncover hidden clues adds a layer of interactivity rarely seen in traditional visual novels. Moreover, its mature themes of abuse, guilt, and redemption are tackled with a rawness that’s both respectful and thought-provoking. Few games dare to confront such heavy topics head-on, and even fewer succeed in doing so with the finesse exhibited here. It’s a bold experiment, one that pays off in spades.

Studio Spotlight – The Rise of 菠蘿 (Pineapple)
菠蘿 is an indie developer known for crafting emotionally charged narratives with minimalist mechanics. With 琳琳, they’ve proven their ability to blend real-world issues with interactive storytelling, carving out a unique niche in the visual novel genre. When compared to other indie studios like Dontnod Entertainment (*Life is Strange*), 菠蘿 focuses less on cinematic flair and more on creating intimate, relatable experiences. It’s a refreshing approach that emphasizes storytelling over spectacle.

Analysis – Every Petal of This Pineapple
1. Gameplay Mechanics: The core of 琳琳 revolves around dialogue choices, investigation, and uncovering clues. Players interact with various characters and environments, using their superpower to reveal hidden details. The mechanics are simple yet effective, providing a sense of agency without overwhelming the player. 2. Narrative Depth: With six distinct CGs and multiple endings, the game rewards curiosity and thoughtful decision-making. The writing strikes a balance between poetic introspection and raw dialogue, ensuring that each moment lands with impact. 3. Visual and Audio Presentation: The hand-drawn art style and muted color palette perfectly capture the game’s somber tone. The soundtrack, while minimalist, enhances the atmosphere with haunting piano melodies and ambient soundscapes. 4. Emotional Impact: Few games evoke such visceral reactions. The portrayal of domestic violence and its ripple effects is harrowing but necessary, grounding the narrative in a stark realism that’s both compelling and unsettling.

Character Development – Lin Lin and Beyond
Lin Lin: The heart of the story. Her plight is both heartbreaking and inspiring, and her interactions with the protagonist form the emotional core of the game. The Protagonist ("I"): A flawed but relatable character whose actions are shaped by the player’s choices. Their growth throughout the story feels earned and authentic. Supporting Cast: Each character, from the nosy neighbors to the cold-hearted parents, plays a crucial role in shaping the narrative. While some are more archetypal, they all contribute to the story’s rich tapestry.

Impact – A Howl Heard Across the Void
琳琳 is more than a game—it’s a statement. It challenges players to confront uncomfortable truths, reminding us of the power of empathy and the importance of taking action in the face of injustice. The game’s willingness to tackle such themes with sensitivity ensures its legacy as a landmark in narrative-driven gaming.

Praise and Critique – A Frosty Perspective
What Glows Like Aurora Lights:

Deep, emotional storytelling with meaningful choices.
Unique blend of visual novel and investigatory gameplay.
Beautiful hand-drawn visuals and an atmospheric soundtrack.
Tackles mature themes with sensitivity and depth.
What Could Chill the Fur:

Short playtime may leave some wanting more.
Limited replayability once all endings are discovered.
Some characters lack depth compared to the main cast.

Personal Opinion – A Tale Worth Telling
As an Ice Wolf who’s seen countless tales unfold, 琳琳 struck a chord deep within my frozen heart. Its ability to blend raw emotion with engaging gameplay makes it a standout experience, one that lingers long after the credits roll. While its brevity may disappoint some, its impact is undeniable. Enjoyment Level: 9/10 – An emotional rollercoaster worth riding. Hate Level: 1/10 – Mainly for its short length.

Conclusion – A Tearful Howl into the Night
琳琳 is a shining example of how games can tackle serious issues while remaining engaging and accessible. Its emotional depth and innovative mechanics make it a must-play for fans of visual novels and narrative-driven experiences. Whether you’re a seasoned gamer or new to the genre, this is a story that deserves to be heard. Verdict: 9/10 – A poignant masterpiece that leaves a lasting impression.
