A Nice Background Distraction
Updated for version 1.1.0 Jada Fishin’ is a simple game, wait until a fish gets caught on the hook then mash enough within the time limit to catch it. You even have a book which keeps track of which and how many fish you’ve caught. There are still a few minor kinks that I'd like to see ironed out but they aren't dealbreakers. The game does not save your settings on exit, though since it only controls the volume this isn't that big of a deal. A minor gripe about the game is that I can't seem to re-scale it, nor does there appear to be any resolution options. Of course, this is no problem for those who want the full 100% immersive Jada Fishin’ experience, or those (like me) who have always dreamed of an interactive Jada Fishin' wallpaper for their desktop. You also can’t remap keyboard controls but for a game that uses three buttons (two of them dedicated to accessing menus) that’s really not much of an issue. The gameplay can see many improvements being as basic as it is. After fishing for an hour, there’s a few features I’d like to seem implemented to enhance my experience. A way to influence what fish will be caught would allow for more variety and control. Perhaps we can use fish we’ve caught as bait to catch bigger fish. Or for collectors there could be a pity system that increases the chances of hooking a fish you haven’t seen the more times you fish up duplicates. It would be nice to be have an indicator of not only how big the fish you’ve hooked is, but also how close you are to catching it. A progress bar that fills up when you mash would be a useful, letting players know how much more they have to mash, or see how close they were to the one that got away. The art style and the tips in the fish book give this game a lot of charm. I am excited to see it expand and improve as time goes on. (P.S. A small mistake. At the time of writing, I noticed that the store page has “Steam Turn Notifications” and “Stats” listed among the features even though the game doesn’t appear to have these features. Also, no need to be sorry and thanks for the amazingly fast update!)
First and foremost this game is bugged from the start. Earlier I released a video going over this showing that all the game contents within its install folder need to be pulled one folder back. This is a pretty big miss on the developers part considering it is detrimental for a game to actually be able to start. Many will not put in the effort to fix this error. Missing executable bugfix here; https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3317801944 JaDa Fishin' is a free fishing game by Larsonsoft. It initially came out October 26th of 2022. It self describes itself as a relaxing quick time journey of 12 fish. It's description also boasts "more to come" but the Steam update log doesn't show anything past an updated version on October 27th. Presumedly the update that placed the executable in the wrong place... Soooo, there really isn't a lot of depth here. Really this feels like a minigame that would be within a much larger game or something you would've played in the mid 2000's on NEWGROUNDS. Speaking of, the art style is not only similarly flash game cartoony but really gives me some JOECARTOON vibes. Something about the orange skin... The entire gameplay past the start screen is waiting until a fish is on your line. When a fish is hooked you gotta tap the spacebar as much as you can within 15 seconds to fill the fish-o-meter bar on the right side of the screen. If you succeed a voice says "you caught" and then the screen will show the fish. Some fish take more or less button pushes to catch. Besides this action the only other thing you seem to be able to do is open the fish book. It counts what you've caught and shows the various types of fish. There is a Cleveland show fish, a Wario fish and fish I imagine are supposed to be the creators. I'm a bit fascinated with this, it seems to be a game of inside jokes. Why is the boat called the S.S. Ricky? Who is Zach always talking about in the Zach Tips? What is the secret final catch that eludes my hook? I find this to be so candid. The music is dreamy. It's got the vibe of it being way too early in the morning and you've overstayed a party after most of the goers have left and now its getting weird. Overall the game really lacks any sort of sufficient amount of content or appeal outside of some gamblers collectors mindset of "I have to catch every fish, I bet the next pull in will be the one I'm missing. Just one more catch and then I'll turn the game off, I promise." Graphics and sound are okay, gameplay itself doesn't do anything new or unique - huge issue that the game doesn't even launch correctly. Maybe there'd be more merit if I was in on the joke but mostly I kept wondering to myself "who is this game for?" as it played. watch this review on video here; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vtyiaEzPyOs
