📝 Main Pros, Cons, and Suggestions:
🟩 Pros:
+ ‘Osu like’ boss battles
+ VS style weapon upgrade system
+ Unique weapon system, attacking either current or future spawns (two battlefields)
+ Eastern music is enjoyable to listen to and is tolerable for repeated playthroughs, and I’d love to hear more tracks of similar quality
🟥 Cons:
- Dialogue is in English, VA however is not
- More spam clicker than rhythm game due to poor readability
- Levels are too long which may lead to music becoming monotonous for some
🏷️ Suggestions:
~ Change meta progression so it’s no longer random
~ ‘Osu’ mechanics during boss battles are the games strongest point and I’d love to see a mode entirely dedicated to them
It's good, just not for me
Songs of Death (SoD) describes itself as a rhythm game with roguelite and survival elements, unfortunately this leads to a lack of direction or focus. While enjoyable to play, due to the broad range of genres the game aims to cover, it unfortunately fails to excel at any of them. Ultimately, SoD lacks what I seek from each genre.
Playing through the initial two difficulties and four levels with a couple of the heroes, I was impressed – It’s all high quality. However, after just over an hour, I felt like I had seen everything, or at least seen as much as I wanted to. The standout aspect of SoD is the boss battle sections, which are where the game excels, but there wasn’t enough of them to keep me playing.
Outside of these sections, you may be disappointed as the game is very much a case of spam clicking opposed to a traditional rhythm game experience. Additionally, the two-tier battlefield works seamlessly with the weapon system, but due to the lack of true rhythm mechanics, it feels like a missed opportunity for a truly standout game. Overall, I had fun and I do recommend it for those who've an interest in Eastern art and music, or those seeking a light rhythm game experience.
