8/10 Shikaku: Cover the grid in rectangles of the right size. What is it: This is a Shikaku, a logic game in which you draw rectangles to cover the entire grid. The grid has one of four sizes, from 5x5 to 15x15, and has some numbers on it. You must draw a rectangle around each such number, so that the total number of cells in that rectangle equals the target number, no rectangles overlap, and the entire grid is covered by rectangles. This require a bit of math and logic, and I found that all the levels have a logical solution with almost no guessing required. That's good! The implementation is quite good, there are only a few things that would make it even better. How hard is it: For me, rather easy. The levels are logical, there's no long chain of assumptions needed to solve them, there is usually a logical path from start to finish. How long is it: 200 levels, 50 in 4 different sizes, plus a tutorial. I finished them all in 3 hours. Multiple levels are unlocked at once, and the harder chapters are unlocked after finishing some of the easier levels. Level design: Good for abstract levels, unique solutions that can be done with logic. I would have liked to see at least a pack of picture levels, where at the end you get a 1-bit picture of something. Quality: Very good for a simple game. Cloud saving and progress achievements, unlimited mid-level saving, unlimited undo, good controls, although not configurable, works with either mouse, keyboard or controller, dark mode and 3 different palettes, good level select, decent settings. Worth the price: Yes. Most positive aspect for me: Good logic game. Most negative aspect for me: Not hard enough. What would make it better: Daily level. Infinite random puzzle generator. Progress reset and multiple profiles. The ability to alter a shape, if I start drawing from within a rectangle it should be extended, not destroyed. The ability to autofill a shape if there is only one possible placement, e.g. middle click on a 6 when there is exactly a 2x3 empty space around it draws the rectangle. A setting for disabling the moving background specks. About This Game
Square Logic is a minimalist puzzle game about coloring the grid with squares and rectangles, respecting the number of each cell.
What players are saying
Decent and fun but gets tedious pretty fast - I never felt like the difficulty increases past maybe a few select levels.
I enjoy a good puzzle game, but generally not super complicated ones. Square Logic is one of those that sit in a sweet spot between way too easy and way too hot. Maybe I'm thinking of porridge. What I mean is the puzzles require a bit of thought, but not too much. The primary reason for this is that you fill in the board with rectangles only, no strange shapes with bits jutting out of the sides. That makes things easier because, well, try filling a box with cubes, and then try filling a box with tesseracts. Which was easier? Nothing else needs to be said, really. Casual puzzle game, low price, I suggest Square Logic to anyone who likes those things.
