This was my first time diving into the world of visual novels, and I was pleasantly surprised by the unique experience Avian Enigma offered. While some areas could use a bit more depth, I enjoyed my time unraveling the enigma.

There’s an unexpected twist towards the end that adds a hint of horror and sadness, making the tale more memorable.

While some may see this as limiting, the compelling plot and well-paced chapters kept me hooked throughout. The game excels in storytelling, with each scene carefully crafted to reveal more about the world and its characters. The characters are easy to distinguish and memorable.
------🔹The game’s duration is relatively short (about an hour for a full playthrough), but the pacing is mostly consistent, though the climax does feel a bit rushed. The absence of player choices made the experience more like an interactive storybook. However, this streamlined approach works in the context of the game, focusing more on delivering a cohesive narrative.
------🔹One minor issue I encountered was the appearance of “/n” text in the dialogue box, likely a coding oversight intended to break up lines of dialogue. This took me out of the immersion momentarily, but it wasn’t game-breaking. Aside from that, everything functioned smoothly.

While it lacks interactive elements, the story it delivers is compelling enough for any fan of visual novels. Though it may benefit from a little more polish, the overall experience was worthwhile.

Found a bird, saved a life!

This is an ambitious galgame intended not only to tell a classic story of “a boy meets a girl” but to explore the classic SF theme of “the relative truth of a universe or world, and what position Human Beings are located among the universe/world.”
It is not hard to figure out the POSSIBLE ending of the game finishing the first couples of chapters, or we can put another way that each and every galgame has a narrow set of options: HE, BE, or TE. However, what really hook us, as a major element of a good galgame, is not merely the fated or destined love path (or tragedy) of the protagonists, but the choice we made as the hero in the game even if it seemed as all options limited by the producer and designers. We can always make a choice, in the face of danger and anger, desire and despair, or affection and infection, as a human living in the single universe of multiverse of reality and unreality — could be a fictional or virtual world – to make up a whole and intact persona of a human being as ourselves.
I am not going to spoil any details of the game of merely an-hour-long or so, but the art and plot and philosophy behind it deserve your time and dimes.

Avian Enigma is a kinetic, sci-fi visual novel developed and published by Aako Inc, Otter Club. You take on the role of a young man working at a factory, living in a time where actual living birds are believed to no longer exist. However, the young man wonders if this is really the case. Is there still a living bird out there? This is the question that occupies his thoughts. One day, as he's going about his business, he encounters a bird, which is being attacked by mechanical cats. The cats are most likely security robots from the factory that he works for. However, fascinated by the bird, the man rushes in to save the bird and then to hide it, tend to its wounds, and make sure to keep it fed. When he next tries to see the bird, it is gone, but shortly after, the man meets a young woman whose clothing strangely resembles the injured bird's plumage, and the beginnings of a relationship form between the two. As I don't wish to go into spoiler territory, I'll stop my story synopsis. ^^

Regarding the gameplay, the story is linear, so no choices are present. You simply play through the story from beginning to end. Several beautiful CGs are present, though, along with full Chinese voice acting and soundtrack. The CGs, along with backgrounds and extra art, can be viewed in the Art Gallery in the Main Menu. Also, there's one Steam achievement, but it won't count towards a user's global total until the game is out of "Steam is learning about this game".

Having gone through the story and gameplay, I'll move onto my thoughts. Avian Enigma caught my interest right away after hearing about it, as I enjoy stories that have that sci-fi, futuristic theme, and thankfully, the developer was very kind to send over a review key. With that said, I'll first go into the story. I like how it starts off on a philosophical question - Do birds exist? In this world, birds have supposedly died off. There are mechanical birds although they're known to serve as company spies since rival factories and such exist. Also, genetic mutations in which food can become contaminated can happen, which is why factories, like the one where the young man works, exist. Despite that this is how the world is, the young factory worker longs to see an actual bird, and he ends up getting his wish. I enjoyed getting to learn about his character in that he's a bit rebellious compared to the factory supervisor, Old Wang, and the other factory workers. Then there's the encounter with the mysterious girl, who strangely resembles the injured bird that the young man finds. I like how there's this unknown aura around her and that there's a dramatic reveal with her towards the end of the story. All I'll just say is that it's definitely not one would expect. As for the relationship between the young man and the mysterious girl, there's supposed to be some romance, but it felt very subtle to me. Of course, I didn't expect that they would immediately be head over heels with each other since they are strangers, but I didn't get that romance vibe from either of them. However, I did feel that they have some sort of special connection that slowly develops. As for how the story ends, I won't reveal spoilers, but there's definitely some unexpected horror as well as sadness at the end. I did enjoy the story quite a lot, though.

With the writing, there are a total of 9 chapters, which includes the epilogue. They do go by quickly, but it isn't much of a surprise since the overall story is short, taking me about an hour to complete. I feel like the thrilling events towards the end are a bit rushed, while most of the story is more on the slower side. As I played the English version, I noticed parts where the sentences felt unnatural or the grammar was off. Although the story is understandable, it wouldn't hurt to have another pass to polish the translation some more.

In regards to the art, it is totally gorgeous. I adore the hand-drawn style that is used here, and I wish that more visual novels would incorporate it. The sprites and backgrounds have this abstract style to them, and of course, they're drawn and colored well. The same goes for the CGs, which I loved to gaze at.

As for the music, there's a good variety of tracks that range from the mysterious to being more thoughtful and contemplative. In addition, there's full Chinese voice acting, which is a joy to listen to, as there are only a handful of visual novels on Steam that have them. The voices fit well with their respective characters, and they match the characters' attitudes and behaviors.

Overall, would I recommend Avian Enigma? If you're looking for a short visual novel to play, one that addresses a philosophical concept, and/or one that takes place in a post-apocalyptic world, then this is worth taking a look. For the asking price, it might be a bit steep for the amount of gameplay although I think that the beautiful art, music, and Chinese voice acting make up for it. However, if you are on the fence, you can wait for a sale.
