Reading glasses recommended, but worth every single word
Oh boy, Hymer 2000 was a ride and easily one of my favorite 2025 games so far. This is absolutely a “go in blind” experience, so I won’t spoil a thing, but trust me: it’s a beautifully crafted narrative experience which is 100% worth your time.
For such a short game, the characters have shockingly solid depth, and the writing hits with the kind of emotional weight that had me reaching for tissues more than once. You’ll spend most of your time digging through in-game programs, piecing together clues and information, and slowly connecting the dots. It’s not a puzzle game, but there’s just enough “try this word, click that place” guessing to keep things fun between the big reading chunks, and yes, it’s very reading-heavy, almost short-novel levels, (but no worries, nothing hard to handle here).
The pixel art is lovely, the little optional mini-game programs are entertaining extras, and the achievements are for the most part manageable. I got 10/12 in under 4 hours without even trying, but I have no idea about the other 2 so completionists, prepare yourselves. It is short, but honestly? It’s the perfect length. Just enough to break your heart and leave you wanting more.
A couple of minor quirks though: no hint system, no quick way to backtrack, and sometimes the main system interactions feel a bit stiff, but it all fits the vibe of the story, so it’s not a dealbreaker.
Overall, it's a must-try for fans of deep, compact storytelling, especially with such an affordable price tag. Completionists beware, but other than that, please just jump in, read everything, and let it punch you right in the feelings! You won't regret it!
