Spoiler-free review.
I've not yet completed the game, but I have really been enjoying the game thus far. This is old school text adventure without the need for word hunting. The story itself has a Christian inspired scenarios. If you aren't a Christian I think you'll enjoy this game for the unraveling mystery as you would any other dark fantasy story. If you are a Christian then you'll probably get a sense for how the game is unfolding but the gravity of the world will be haunting. Either way, I recommend it strongly to those who like the interactive fiction format!
Some of the highlight points:
- the game atmosphere is engaging;
- I really like the hand drawn map;
- the light humor when you try to do things you know you shouldn't do; and the meta-humor for text adventure tropes while still showing love for the genre;
- the check mark hint/walkthrough system works well and it's ordered in a fairly spoiler-free way if you don't want to learn too much ahead; good for knowing you didn't miss something important;
A few little nits:
- I wish the north/south/east/west mouse selection were in stable positions; if you click the same mouse location you can end up going in different directions;
- I'm not sure the open/close door does much to help the game; I understand why it exists, but the mechanics for this aspect are probably best to remove and instead auto-open/close doors as needed (except for locks/special ways to enter areas);
- many areas that have no purpose, although I get why it's like that for the game's mood, and maybe they will have purpose when I get further; the map helps though and you do need some mystery build up so I'm not sure I'd actually recommend any changes/improvements;
Overall, I highly recommend this game and I look forward to the expansions.
