Nine Winters tasks you with maintaining a rooftop shelter through nine escalating winter seasons, using a radio to signal for aid while managing limited resources and deciding whom to let inside. The game blends survival mechanics with cozy aesthetic and narrative choices, appealing to players who want low-stakes tension and story-driven decision-making rather than fast-paced action.

Hello, this is KKIRI Studio, the developer of Nine Winters.A number of things have changed since we released the demo, but we haven’t had a chance to properly share an update until now. Those of you who follow our official X or Instagram accounts may already be aware of how development has been progressing. However, we realized that players who only follow Nine Winters on Steam may not have seen these updates, so we wanted to share them here as well.Nine Winters was originally developed as a web-based project, from the initial proof of concept all the way through to the demo. However, with future projects in mind and in order to further improve the game’s visuals and overall quality, we are currently migrating the game to the Unity engine. We initially chose a web-based approach because we wanted the game to be easy to play on platforms such as itch.io. As development progressed, however, we found that it was difficult to reach the level of visual quality and polish we were aiming for within those limitations. For that reason, Nine Winters is now being ported to Unity.First, here is the new shelter selection screen currently under development. With the move to Unity, the overall visual quality of the game has improved considerably. And here is actual in-game footage from the current playable build of the demo.As you can see, the visual quality has improved significantly compared to the previous version. We have also changed the way the environment works.Previously, environmental effects were mostly limited to rain and snow. Now, the natural environment itself reacts dynamically. This is one of the areas we have spent a great deal of time improving. Since atmosphere and environmental audio are such important parts of Nine Winters, we wanted the world to feel more alive while still maintaining the cozy atmosphere we are aiming for.(The amount of tree movement has been increased further since this footage was recorded.)Finally, we have made major changes to exploration.Previou...
The early game has been reworked. Previously you had to gather resources before you could relocate. Now you are given a choice from the start. pick the shelter you want and settle in. You can still relocate at any time. The tutorial has been rebuilt. Its structure and pacing were reworked around the player's experience rather than a checklist. You meet the cat sooner. Where the cat used to arrive on day 9, it can now show up from day 3. You can walk the rooftop. Previously the first-person view only let you look around the room; now you can step outside and walk the building. The camera is free to turn. Previously you were locked to fixed angles. Finish a Cozy run once and free rotation opens up. Supplies come a little easier. Good finds used to be rare; drop rates for them are now 1.5x. Interaction sounds were missing, and they're in now. Doors opening and closing, footsteps in snow, kitchen work, and more. Additional bug fixes:Interior partition walls could block passage they shouldn't. Item lights could sit slightly off from the model they belong to. Leaving on an expedition while seated skipped the departure scene. Thanks for playing the demo. Feedback in the discussions is read.
