Neoth, who is a prince and royalty, is pretty tired of his duties. He enjoys being alone and running off to the nearby forest. One day he meets a mysterious but cheerful girl there, who definitely could use his help. In the end, he gives in and decides to help her, well knowing this will have its consequences.
Sadly, Whispering Flames only contains around one hour playing time in total. That’s very short for a Visual Novel. However, even though our journal was a very short one I enjoyed every moment while playing it. This game contains no Voice Acting.
On the side note, you definitely shouldn’t expect a standard Otome while playing Whispering Flames. There is only one love interest throughout the whole game, which is our Hero Neoth, and only one choice which decides what ending you will get. There are a total of two endings and both are very short since the choice for the decision is pretty much in the ending.
You should keep in mind that Whispering Flames doesn’t exactly focus on romantic moments. It definitely focuses on romantic, however to me, it feels like it rather tells the story of how the two of them meet and get to know each other. There are no kisses and no sweet talk, so their relationship is very innocent. Given how short this game is I think it was a good decision. Romance needs time to grow in my opinion. Everything else would have felt rushed. So on the other hand Whispering Flames leaves a lot of room for interpretation, but I’d say it’s like an introduction of the two of them.
So, I’d also like to mention that I really like the way the endings were made. When I finally had to make a decision I felt conflicted. Which choice do I have to pick for the good ending? I always tend to play through every possible ending, route and every scenario, though I usually think many endings are really unnecessary, especially the bad ones, and you could skip them easily. I’m sure you know what I’m referring to. However, that wasn’t the case with Whispering Flames. Both endings satisfied me. There are only happy endings, well at least I would interpret them has happy. Though I guess one of them is even happier!
I loved both of our protagonists, their chemistry is great. Kareema is the typical airhead girl, who is still hard working. She is always optimistic and never gives up. Neoth, on the other hand, seems very mature. Do you know the feeling when you’re playing a game and just want to hug a character? That’s the way I felt about Neoth. He just wanted to be free, to make his own decisions, but he can’t because he’s a prince and royalty. There is a lot of pressure on him. His father couldn’t understand him and only sees him as a troublemaker. We don’t see a scenario with his father though.
So, both main characters are obviously from a different world. It really surprised me, given Kareema was from the “modern” world, that she wasn’t really surprised about Neoth being able to use magic. It kinda felt off because she just accepted everything, even being in a different world wasn’t a big deal to her. I mean she wanted to go back home but it felt like she was rather like as long as she is not dying or in danger it’s alright. Maybe it’s because her personality is bright and positive. But when I was playing the game I was wondering, that’s it? There is no further reaction at all?
So, all in all, I can definitely recommend Whispering Flames. While I wish the story was a bit longer, it certainly didn’t disappoint me. You should just keep in mind that this game isn’t romantic per se but instead tells a short and cute story about two people who happened to meet each other despite originally being from two different worlds. How will the story unfold? And will they be happy together or do they have to split up eventually?
