I apologize for the lengthy review, I wanted to just cover my gameplay experience from the first mission. I sorely wanted to like this game. It fills a niche I have been wanting more games of; single player WW2 shooters that cover the lesser popularized fights of WW2. On paper, this would seem like an excellent choice. Upon the first mission, however, the issues manifest themselves...
Upon starting the first mission, you are greeted with a cutscene of an old tape player explaining that the Germans have attacked and it is your duty to defend Poland and turn back the invaders. Part way through, the cutscene froze but the audio was still playing. I pressed space to skip, since I already am well acquainted with the opening days of WW2.
Now I was in the back of a truck with my squadmates as they explain the same thing the cutscene explained just moments ago. The voice acting is... bad. For some reason, there are British voice actors (who are doing a decent job, but why are they in Poland in 1939?) and there are Polish voice actors who are quite stilted and emotionless. Not the worst thing for a single player shooter, but it was painfully noticeable.
You get to your assigned trench just as soon as the Germans make an attack, and this is where one of the first major issues arose for me; there is no prone function and half the trench leaves you vulnerable to enemy fire, even while crouched. This is a major design flaw, especially with how little damage you can take - four or five shots - before going down. There is no way to be revived, if you die you go back to your last checkpoint.
Once you manage to get to the BAR gun and singlehandedly eliminate wave after wave of Germans, Panzer tanks will show up and you must get to AT guns at the back of the trench to take them out. This will require you to use most or all of your medkits, since you will be dashing over open ground. But when you get to them, they blow up. Twice in a row. And then your new task is to run back to the front of the trench and man the AT rifle, but without your medkits to get back, expect to die a few times trying.
Once you take the tanks out, Stuka planes will attack and you then are ordered to the Bofors AA gun to defend the trench. Thankfully, this does not blow up when you reach it. You then shoot down a dozen or so Stukas (which inexplicably make ripping sheet metal sounds when shot down) to no real effect. You finally must man a water cooled MG and kill off the last of the German assault on your own. (Not like your AI was helping to start with)
Upon completing the first part of the first level, your squad goes off in a car to "other bunkers" but you can't all fit on the car so you and one other squaddie are left to travel on foot and catch up. After walking 100 feet you see that they got ambushed and killed, and you have to kill the Germans that killed them. You then walk another 50 feet and meet two random soldiers who accompany you to the other bunkers.
Here, the poor game design rears it's ugly head again; reaching the first bunker you find that it has been shelled to oblivion and your three squadmates lament the loss of the secure position. A timer then appears on the screen, with one of your squaddies alerting you to approaching Germans; you have roughly 7 seconds to get behind a truck and not get spotted. This is an issue when your three squadmates block the SPECIFIC point you must be at in order for you "not to get discovered." If the timer runs out, you get sent back to meeting your two new squadmates again! If you DO get to your spot in time, you will be metaphorically slapped in the face as there are only TWO German soldiers and you kill them IMMEDIATELY after getting behind the truck; WHY ADD THE MISSION FAILING TIMER IF YOU KILL THEM RIGHT AFTER?!
Once that fiasco is over you then have to storm the other bunker that you were originally tasked with defending. Chuck a few grenades at the soldiers outside the bunker and pick off the MG guy inside and you can safely make it to the door and clear the bunker. Upon clearing the first room, I stepped on a dead body, got stuck, tried to jump and was sent through the floor and into the eternal abyss of "under the map." I closed the game, and requested a refund. This was such a disappointing experience.
