Lucky me has the dubious honour of writing the first review of "12 locks and keys".

"12 locks and keys" is a 2D mobile app tier puzzle game slapped together with the godawful GameMaker Studio video game construction kit, by copy + paste merchants, wow wow Games. All these guys do is take construction kit garbage and asset flips and try scam people into paying them for someone else's work.

In this case it does look like a little work went into filling out the Yoyogames/GameMaker Studio template for a 2D puzzle game... but not much. The game doesn't even work because it doesn't properly register mouseclicks. I guess since wow wow Games don't do any game development and just copy/fill out game templates made by others, it should be no surprise they don't do any software testing either.

To erase any doubt as to the status of this game as basic cash grab shovelware, there's a ridiculous $10 USD price tag, and of course as usual wow wow Games sold keys for this in bulk to DailyIndieGame as soon as it launched.

2/10 12 Locks & Keys is an overpriced puzzle(?) scroller with poor translation, kindergarten art, and little to no guidance. It is clear the creators had put no love or effort in this title.

12 Locks & Keys has to be one of the worst titles I’ve ever completed. I don’t think I’d ever pay money for this title. You follow the story, the whole thirty seconds of it, of these two young children who need to open 12 locks. The puzzles and story make no sense and there’s no guidance so the majority of the time I spent paying this was just aimlessly clicking on everything until I got lucky. I wouldn’t even call this a puzzle game as there weren’t really any puzzles for you to solve. A lot of the time it was just frustrating. I wouldn’t even recommend this to a child. Luckily It took me a little less than 30 minutes to complete the title entirely and should take most people under 10 minutes to complete.

It’s ugly, the story is nonexistent, the translation is awful, the soundtrack is bad, and the quality is nowhere near other titles falling under the same price range.

My takeaway:

Pros
  • Playable. Kinda.

Cons
  • Art is truly awful.
  • I turned the music down since the soundtrack was not something I wanted to listen to on a loop.
  • No story.
  • Overpriced.
  • Barely any actual puzzles.
  • Poorly translated.
  • It doesn’t sound like the voice actors wanted to voice act in the nicest way possible.
  • Zero guidance.

What was up with that whole thing with the ball?

12 Locks and Keys (PC 2021)

Just press space bar. I’m not kidding that’s all you need to do. $4.50 just to press space bar so that you can rescue a soccer ball I’ve named 'Wilson' out of a garden shed which has 12 locks on it. Why so many locks? Where is this garden shed? The Bronx?

The 2 developers Anton and Angelina Bocharov who are credited with this game, their surname is of Slavic origin and so I assume they are Russian. It also seems to be their only creation, so maybe its more a joint student product than anything else. Nevertheless, what’s on offer here is of 1 minute entertainment value if you instinctively press space bar. If you are curious and attempt to try and unlock the 12 locks of the garden shed yourself another way, then it might be half an hour entertainment value, tops.

To be honest this game should be free. Granted it works, its wholesome and has some cute, very basic artwork to appeal to maybe a pre-school type player. But, other than that, I can’t imagine another target audience who would benefit from playing this.

Also, I must note that there is a bug where if you don’t use the keys on the shed as you collect them and instead just collect everything without unlocking, then you will eventually run out of inventory space and for some reason the keys will fail to disappear when you use them and remain in your inventory which will prevent you from collecting future keys.

In final, a $4.50 press space bar game to win. The game encourages children to eat fallen apples from the floor, that the sun can be moved using your fingers and that brute force is quicker and better than actual problem solving. I agree, with their very fitting company name WOW WOW. After the first few minutes that’s all I was shouting after playing this…
