I've been going through a weird phase since Where Winds Meet came out I've been looking for anything Romance era related and I came across Whisper brooks, it's a competent visual novel for sure. The story is simple but effective investigation, mystery, unsettling little discoveries that slowly add up. It's the kind of narrative where you always feel like you're one step behind something you don’t fully understand. The environmental storytelling is the real star old notes, broken structures, strange symbols around the woods it all feeds into the same uneasy feeling. The writing is competent and I enjoyed the seperate stories, check it out its free.
A visual novel game that has two different stories currently and at least one on the way to be released. Whisper Books has an interesting way of combining different cultures, like Aztecs, ancient Chinese and Vikings.
The stories were actually pretty interesting, but the way choosing the different routes and doing choices was very weird and kinda made the choice unnecessary to even be there. If there were no choices, the game would have been basically the same. The artworks are beautifully drawn and show great detail in cultural appropriate clothing as well as some changes to suit the story and make it their own.
The translation to English was a little lacking and sometimes used words that didn't really fit, and the dialogue between characters felt a little awkward and out of place. Cannot say how the literature is for the original language, but in English there could be some improvements. The voice acting was in Chinese and was actually pretty great, though I turned it off, as it was a little distracting when the speaker was reading the texts fully. If it was just some small voice acting, maybe it would have been better.
All in all, Whisper Books is an interesting visual novel game, I do think it's a great game to be played, but if you want good English translation, this game isn't for you. I would also recommend to wait for a sale if you do decide to get this game.
We have decided to change Whisper Books to a free game on January 13, 2024. This move is to facilitate more players to experience this game and avoid it being buried in commercial competition. Perhaps because this game has a satirical literary flavor, or because it challenges certain traditional industries, the commercial competition it faces is indeed considerable. We hope that players who have already purchased understand our approach. We hope more players can support our game.
1. Copywriting revisions in English, Russian, and Japanese have been completed. 2. Three image detail adjustments. 3. Added back button at the end of each story.
1. The description of the game features of Whisper Books has been further strengthened. 2. Most of the copywriting of the "Choice Point" has been improved to make the content expression more immersive, and at the same time, the problem of "some content is like a preaching" criticized by players has been revised. (The Chinese part of this modification has been completed. English, Japanese and Russian translations will be in place within 2 days.) Developer: I hope you will continue to support our game. We will humbly listen to comments and work hard to improve the shortcomings of the first release.
