The dilemma under top-tier art resources: successful as a commercial product, failure as a game

5/10

Opening
Memento Mori, which means "Do not forget that you are mortal", is a Latin proverb that is closely related to medieval Christian funeral art and has a philosophical connotation. Using it as the name of this game, which has a strong medieval art style and draws on the witch trial in the background, is impressive and relevant. This AFK gacha-raising mobile game released in 2022 has left a deep impression on many players with its top-notch illustrations and music. Despite extremely low development and operating costs, it has achieved amazing revenue in this highly competitive field. Even now, it is still thriving and will undoubtedly continue to exist for a long time. However, Memento Mori has also left a significant mark in the history of mobile games and even video games in a bad way. Its gameplay can be described as a top-level waste of art resources; it would not be an exaggeration even if the operation and developer team kowtowed the art team to apologize. Memento Mori may be an excellent art gallery and a successful commercial work, but it is far from a qualified game.
Strength
The biggest and only highlight of the game is the stunning art and music that will definitely catch your eye. Exquisite watercolor hand-painting combined with the beautiful lyrical lament of each character in the game is an important way for the game to attract and retain players. Each character in the game has various backgrounds, and the voice actors are almost all big names in the Japanese voice actor industry. In terms of gameplay, Memento Mori is quite casual, with almost no operations to speak of, and the gaming experience is totally relaxing. The game will often open new servers for players to choose from, which to a certain extent alleviates the problem that latecomers of AFK online games find it difficult to catch up with the progress, and the game also provides decent freebies to players. For hardcore gamers who are willing to spend money and time on it, Memento Mori also has mechanisms designed for them like in-game-social PVP and rankings, which can allow players to get certain positive feedback.
Weakness
Unfortunately, despite its few bright spots, Memento Mori has almost nothing but flaws. As a game, Memento Mori's gameplay is essentially simple. The seemingly numerous modes are all similar. The battles are completely automated and can even be skipped, there is no sense of interactivity at all. The art resources in the game are limited to character illustrations and maps, and the battle scenes all act like dynamic PowerPoint, with no ornamental value at all, too. The game's character-raising model is quite monolithic, and the game content is extremely limited. Even if judged from the perspective of an idle game, it is unqualified as well. After players complete the game's tutorial, the game will no longer have any plot. It is completely impossible to build a mature game worldview and story through fragmented character side stories, lament, and map backgrounds. If the main point of gacha raising mobile game is that there is sweetness after bitterness and that the freshness and fun brought to players in the early stages form path dependence in the middle and late stages, then Memento Mori is likely to make players bored within a few hours of getting started. In addition, even with the fully automatic combat function, the daily tasks are still relatively cumbersome and require players to invest a certain amount of time every day.
Conclusion
As a game, Memento Mori has survived to this day for two main reasons: casual players stick with it because of the game's top-notch art resources, and the unlimited character raising and heavy social and PVP elements are the game's main profit points. It's obvious that the developer only uses Memento Mori as an IP merchandising game to make quick money and promote physical game-related products. Now that the game is about to celebrate three years since its release, apart from continuing to invest in the game's art resources, Memento Mori has not made any progress in the development of game playability. This means that Memento Mori is destined to be unsuitable for traditional gamers. For those who are too busy in real life to have time to play games, but hope to find an option to kill time, Memento Mori may be a good choice. If just regard it as a music player and art viewer, casual players could get a good gaming experience as well. The poor gameplay makes it almost impossible for Memento Mori to retain other players, making it one that is quite selective in its audience. From a business perspective, Memento Mori is almost a typical case of the most successful. It is hard to imagine that a game with almost no playability, with all efforts devoted to art resources and considered to be an utterly inferior game in the eyes of many gamers, can rank among the top 60 most profitable mobile games in Japan all year around. This may also indirectly reflect that some stereotypes about the mobile game industry are not groundless. Gameplay is not the main thing; fragmented, light casual, and how to stimulate players' consumption desire, and pleasure are the keys to success here. Personally, I feel more regretful about Memento Mori. If the gameplay, worldview, and plot of it could be polished more meticulously, this work would undoubtedly go further and even have the hope of being on par with several evergreens in the industry pyramid, and it would definitely not be in the current situation.
Steam Deck Experience: NOT Playable
Game took an insame amount of time to download and than after that it fails to log in. Originally played this game on Android. The only reason I don't recommend is because it is a classic F2P mobile game with all the classic F2P mechanics that want your money. Also, I don't really get AFKRPGs. They are literally games that you don't play, which defeats the purpose of it being a game. I will say that the visuals, soundtrack, story, animations, characters, and voice acting are staggeringly beautiful. Why did they have to be wasted on this? If someone made a normal RPG in this style, with one upfront cost, no micro-transactions, and offline mode for the main campaign, they'd have my money the moment the game became available. Edit: Just now noticed how the Steam store page conveniently doesn't have a screenshot of the home screen that is chock full of ads and shortcuts for things in their store. Coincidence?

I played this for many hours on mobile, and it's bad. It lures you in with the great music and art, but that's all the "game" has to offer. It is a gacha game, but not a well done one, is a ridicolous cash grab where you are required to get multiple copies of the same unit, because each extra copy increases the maximum level of your units. It has nothing to offer that you can't experience on youtube. Do yourself a favour, and don't waste time and expecially money on this trash.
