about 5 minutes of a game, without much depth.
5 'levels' are just a slight variant in shape
No real progression. You put down shapes so you can earn a bigger multiplier on the money you make to put in more shapes.
That is it. There isn't really a game here.

There's something here that could become a decent game. Unfortunately, there isn't anything actually succeeding in making it good. It plays like a good high school project and I beat the whole game in 23 minutes. I'd give it a "meh whatever, take a positive review" if it was free, but it isn't.

Edit Jan 2026: No clue why this game is $10 now. I got it for $1. Do not buy this for anything more than free.

Asteroid Core isn't really a proper game, it's just a lazy 2D browser/Flash-tier "number incrementer" game where the object of the game is to increase the in-game currency by clicking, and sometimes buying things that increase the rate at which your currency/score goes up. It's an incredibly shallow game loop, to the point you might as well just run a program that does "i=i+1; print i" and watch the numbers go up automatically, and just watch it. You'd get the exact same outcome. If this sounds completely mindless, you're not wrong.

But there's a lot more going on under the hood with this Early Access clicker. There's a long history of the developer chopping and changing the assets and package descriptions, even the genres of the game. One of the games previous names was "Zodiac Hentai - H3ntai Puzzle"... make of that what you will. This chopping, changing and switching around is highly suspicious, to the point we can and should question the developers real motivations here... will they fulfil their promises under Early Access? Or will this be changed again to some other game? Is the developer lining this up for a fake game scam like the fake Palworld scam that got a lot of games and developer shell accounts banned? Only time can tell.

Anyway, reviews are about the games, so let's talk about this game, such as it is today. It's a boring clicker game with a little bit of block placement as you work out which addons you want to add to your clicking. Ho hum. Bad graphics, bad gameplay, nothing interesting here.

The game is still being developed, but development is slow enough that the game appears to be headed to Development Hell. While there's still time before the game reaches the developers committed deadline to complete the game, it's only getting very small updates.. There's no reliable indication the game will ever be completed, which is another reason for gamers to avoid this. It's important to remember that only about 25% of Early Access games ever get completed... the vast majority of Early Access games are abandoned and all money taken from gamers is never refunded. Early Access games are a huge risk and in general should be avoided.

Let's get into the litany of common defects. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. Heck, the game is only 5MB in size... if they trimmed it down it could fit onto a couple of floppy disks. It's 2024!!!

A choice was made to use obsolete, decades old retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result.

There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision.

The controls can't be customised because the game has such a dumbed down, simplified interface that it's just point and click stuff like a browser/Flash game. The fact that the interface is this dumbed down might be seen as a problem in itself, however... this is a fairly shallow experience if you're the kind of gamer that likes to play games with deep, rich control schemes and interaction. You'll get none of that here.

Some of the defects in the game can be attributed to the choice of using the GameMaker Studio construction kit/toolset. This is a very poor quality toolset favoured by amateur developers as it's cheap and requires little in the way of development skill, but unfortunately has very limited capabilities. Just as you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear, you can't make a great video game if you use a terrible engine. GameMaker Studio is most commonly used to make retro pixel shovelware and cash grabs.

A strong argument can be made that construction kits like GameMaker Studio should never be used to make games for profit, as the "developer", JOZGamer Hatus Quemuel Aolriki RFL Art has done here. These construction kits are intended to teach people some of the basic principles of game development, and to make small demos to pass around with friends. They're not intended to replace to actual work of real, professional game developers. So it's inappropriate when amateurs try to use these for profit, without any actual, real game development effort taking place. This doesn't result in products that have any real meaningful value for gamers.

The very poor quality of this game puts it squarely on-par with ancient 1990's Flash/Java games, and given it's 2024 (and this was released not so far back in 2024), gamers and the industry expect and deserve better than this kind of low effort shovelware.

These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game.

The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 3 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 100,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected.

Asteroid Core has the pathetically optimistic price of around $5 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the unethical nature of the developer. Remember that if you buy a game from an unethical developer, you're putting your money at risk. For comparison, the $5 asking price for this game could get you games like "Payday 2", "Mass Effect 2" or "This War of Mine". Quality, professionally made games like those are frequently on sale cheaper than this. There's also thousands of free, superior quality games on Steam.

Profile Features Limited!
Valve have marked this game as "Profile Features Limited" at the time of this review. This is usually caused by poor sales figures and low community acceptance for the game (to date). Until this status changes, this game will not give you +1 to your Game Collector badge count, appear in profile achievements or any other Steam meta-accomplishments, nor can it be displayed in some profile showcases. If these factors are important to you, it may be worth holding off before buying this game.
