Loot of Baal is an idle game where you recruit and manage a team of adventurers to fight demons and collect loot while you work or play other games. The game runs passively on your desktop, automating dungeon runs and resource gathering as your crew grows stronger. However, the game faced a Steam delisting due to copyright issues with its assets, and players have reported significant balance problems and interface design flaws that undermine the idle experience.

interestingly, around level 30, I tested a build for a melee skill on Assasin. I wanted to compare to compare the damage/dps of several different weapons on the dummy, but I found that the overall damage and dps was the same, no matter which weapon I used - and the same when I used no weapon at all. (the damage of the weapons varied quite a lot - but it made no difference. dodgy to say the least, made me stop playing because I realize that the equipped weapon makes no difference basically.)

Maybe there's a good game here, but there's no way I'm ever going to find out due to the absolutely godawful UI. It's borderline unplayable. A game that takes up way too much space for an "always on screen" game, but also doesn't have enough space to provide a reasonable, fluid experience for the player, so ends up being extremely clunky with multiple in-game menus and windows overlapping each other in nonsensical and unintuitive ways as the game desperately tries to do way too much with way too small a space.

It's very obvious what has happened here and screenshots illustrate it pretty well (I strongly suspected this was the case before I purchased): The developer wanted to make an idle game that sits on the screen and allows you to do other things while keeping an eye on the game. The game gradually grew in complexity and so did the size of the window and intricacies of the in-game user interface. Scope creep and poor project management.

What you're left with is an idle game that wants to stay on the screen, but is too big to make that viable without covering too much of your other windows, but at the same time, the game has enough complexity and requires enough different UI elements that the limited screenspace also makes it an absolute nightmare to navigate. It's stuck in a no-man's-land where the developer has tried to have its cake and eat it too while the player gets the worst of both worlds. It's really awful.

Either bite the bullet and make it full-screen or reduce the complexity because there's no feasible way it can remain in its current state and be a successful game and an enjoyable experience.

Edit: And now I'm seeing that people have lost up to ten hours of progress on day one of release because their server was "attacked". Why is progress even saved online? Dodged a bullet with this one, really grateful for refunds right about now.

Edit 2: And as of now, the game is removed from steam and doesn't have a store page due to the fact that it contains sounds that were directly stolen from Diablo 2 and art that appears to have been stolen from the indie game Stoneshard. Just sheer incompetence and theft all the way down. If you're reading this then they've probably removed the stolen assets and it's back up on the store, but be aware that these guys are not only incompetent, but thieves as well.

Please don't support this behavior.

Honestly, it’s quite disappointing.

Few days after this game released, the game was delisted from Steam due to a DMCA takedown over copyrighted assets used in the game. According to the developer, some graphic assets were the issue, and they said they were working to resolve it. They claimed they never intended to infringe on any copyrights and appealed to users for understanding, emphasizing their honesty.

But while the game was still delisted, a large number of stolen Diablo II audio assets in this game were quietly replaced. And once the game was relisted, the developer deleted all the posts where they had previously addressed the incident.

The game itself isn’t bad. It’s not exactly well-made, but it’s not a terrible game either — it’s decent enough to enjoy casually.
That said… I don’t know. Deleting those announcement posts about DMCA takedown and trying to move on like nothing happened… I just don’t think that’s the right thing to do.

Sorry to say this, but I’m removing this game from my library.
