Hocus Focus blends a Pomodoro-style focus timer with light progression mechanics: work in timed intervals to unlock new magical study spaces, collect creature companions called Mitzkins, and customize your environment with ambient soundscapes. It's designed for students and remote workers who want gentle gamification and aesthetic appeal alongside their productivity routine, without demanding active play during work sessions.

As a lover of all things idler, I appreciate the whimsy this game is trying to bring to the table. The hand crafted artwork is beautiful and the varied playlist is def something I can see myself running in the background. But 30 min into it, and I am ready to close it and go back to Spirit City.

For starters, I understand the point of an idler is to keep it open on a second monitor as you go about your day. You passively level, get points etc. Understood. But there is usually some sort of light intro or tutorial to ease you into the interface and explain how this certain idler works. You get nothing of the sort here. And so the confusion begins.

I did figure some things out by just clicking. But other things are still a mystery. There is a map option at the top. If you click on it to start, it is completely blank and you can't do anything with it. Eventually, as you level up you unlock locations you can visit on the map. To idle. Again... none of this is explained. There is another button at the top, 'Adventure Mode'. I still have no idea what that does. You click it and nothing happens.

There just really isn't much going on here, even by idler standards. In your main room, your character just sits at a desk writing. There isn't really much to interact with on the screen other than the productivity tools. You cannot change what activities your character is doing. And speaking of characters... you cannot even fully customize her. You cannot choose if you want to play as a male or female. There is one set skintone, and you start with a short blond bob. You can unlock new hairstyles and new shirts (but not pants?) with money that you passively gain (I am assuming by levelling up, again not explained). There is a cat with some skins that you can pay to unlock and that you can pet. But it doesn't do much either. I see a cauldron in the corner and a potion book I can open up. Maybe one day I will be able to make potions idly but who knows >.>

The productivity tools are basic. A nice feature is the 'Diary' mode. It gives you a section to openly write in, accompanied with a more visual and guided journaling section which I thought was a cool way to encourage reflection/mindfulness (ie. mood scale, what are you grateful for today, proud of etc). It would be nice to see these questions change up or randomize so you aren't exploring the same topic every day.

You can customize how your room looks and buy new items to style it to your liking. This might take some time (as all idlers do) but I did notice that you make most of your experience to level up (how you make money) from using the productivity tools. Progression may be slower for those who use these games more for idling/screensavers (or don't use the tools every session).

And lastly, my progression isn't saving. I have levelled up multiple times now but everytime I close the game and open it back up, all my progress is lost and I am starting new again. There is no button in the settings menu to save, so I am assuming it is suppose to save automatically.

Overall, this is a bit disappointing. It feels like an unfinished EA product. The lack of animations/tasks to assign your character coupled with the complete lack of proper character customization, makes this a hard idler to want to keep running. The art truly is stunning but I would like to see more variation on my screen as I idle. Not just the character doing the same thing. Once the save feature is properly fixed, I may revisit it to unlock more of the maps and level up. I will update my review as needed. But as of right now there are other idlers that just do it better, offering similar productivity tools and more customization options to suit your idler needs.

Update: I am now able to save my game and progress. Thank you to the devs for the speedy fix. I will play a bit more and update my review as needed. Best of luck!!

Well, it does exactly what it says. It's a companion app, with hand-drawn graphics in the developer's signature style.

Will I be more productive? No. But at least now I'll be unproductive in style.

I want to start out by saying I love this games concept. I love the vibe, I love the music, I love the hand-drawn art, it gives such Howl's Moving Castle Vibes in the way its so beautifully hand drawn. That being said, I am very very disappointed that a game that prides itself on customization has only one skin tone. Especially when there are hairstyles that show the intent of being more inclusive, like the afro styles, it just feels like diversity and inclusion was an afterthought to the devs. Also worth noting that there were comments from months before full release where during demos people commented on the lack of skin tones.

I would love to see the devs add a variety of skin tones to the game and would be happy to edit my review when its implemented, but until then I can't recommend the game.

Skin Tone Selection Now Available!

Hey guys! It took a bit of time (and a lot of work 😅), but the skin tone selector is now live! You can find it in the character customization submenu, right under the shoes:There is no cost associated to it, and you can change it whenever you feel like it.If you've been following these updates it's no news to you that this feature took more than we expected, and we're sorry we could only have it live a couple of weeks after launch. It involved a lot of shader magic, and a whole lot of recoloring and exporting of a ton of frames of animation. Outfits being so different shape-wise really complicated things, especially where hands are involved. That's the thing with 2D animation: anything you add or modify takes a lot of work, and a lot of checking. We've done our best to test it extensively in house (picking each skin tone, going to every location to see if everything is alright, etc). Things seem to be in order, but in case we've missed anything (like a hand being the wrong color for a skin tone, we fixed a lot of such situations), please let us know in the bug report thread in Steam discussions and we'll fix it right away. More content is coming in the following weeks, so stay tuned 👀 As always, let us know if you have questions, suggestions, or thoughts about Hocus Focus. We love to hear what you guys think about the game, what works and what can be improved ♥ With apologies again for this taking so long, hope you enjoy the update! - Stuck In Attic

New update: window resize, location ambient tweaks & more

Hey all! We've been keeping a watchful eye on all the feedback you've been providing for us, and noting what you guys feel would improve your experience with Hocus Focus. Window ResizeOne of the suggestions that came up a lot was allowing the game window to be resized - it's now live in the latest update. If you're in full screen, use the middle button in the top right corner to go into windowed mode, and then drag from the corners of the window to set the game to your desired width and height. Note: when going back into full screen, the game may sometimes display with thin horizontal black bars on the top and bottom. Clicking the in-game maximize button a couple of times fixes this. Please let us know if this feature works nicely for you! Updated Ambient Sound for LocationsAs mentioned in a previous update, we were aware that certain sounds in the mix of location ambient filesjumped out a bit too much (e.g. dogs barking, church bells tolling, creaky sounds etc). We've adjusted a lot of these ambient files, so they should be less intrusive now. Also, don't forget that you can always adjust these location ambient sounds from the volume mixer, under "Location": ⏲ Timer alarm selection previews had stopped working in the previous update, they are fixed in this current build. We're still at work on skin tone customization, it will come soon but there are thousands of individual frames that need adjusting, repacking and implementing, so it's taking a while. Enjoy Hocus Focus, and let us know in the replies if anything goes wonky with these changes 🙏 - Stuck In Attic

XP and Hairdo adjustments, UI fixes

Hey everyone! It's been a few days since Hocus Focus came out, and we really appreciate the feedback and suggestions from you guys. We're updating the game accordingly, so except these patches to come often these days.Changes in the new build: Adjusted passive XP gainOne of the challenges of designing Hocus Focus is trying to please different types of players that enjoy it for different reasons - we're trying to make sure the game works nicely for people who use it to increase their focus and productivity, but we also can't ignore folks who just want to have a pretty atmosphere generator in the background and still be able to satisfyingly level up.For this reason, we've significantly increased the amount of XP you get from just idling, 4x-ing it. You can always check your XP level by hovering over the horizontal gauge to the right of your level indicator:Adjusted hairdo pricesWe've heard from several of you that hairdos were too expensive, so now they are more affordable. We're trying to move gingerly with customization, since the reward balancing is a delicate and scary thing. We want to hear from you! Let us know if any particular customization option seems over or underpriced, and we'll carefully consider it. Our testers were very dedicated but also very few, so we always suspected we'd have to make changes here once more people started playing.Other fixesFixed an issue where some buttons were wrongly showing in adventure modeTimer settings now get savedEpic Journeys completed in previous days no longer show in the current listComing very soon: We've heard from several of you that certain sounds in the location ambients are too loud and distracting, so I'm already at work adjusting volumes and / or removing certain samples (e.g. dogs barking in Sighisoara - I have to admit they fooled me too on some occasions 😅). These will most likely patched into the next update. Please let us know if the adjustments made the game better for you - especially the XP and price re...
