The beginning is a bit different from usual tower defense games because you have to prepare your towers before each stage. First, you need to select what types of towers you want to use. The selection is limited to a basic arrow tower and a production tower, but you gain something new with every stage you beat, such as block or healing towers. Some towers function more like skills and are used only once instead of staying on the playing field, such as a bomb that explodes.

Each tower or skill type can be selected twice and placed on a bar that contains 16 slots. One reason for this is that towers have a cooldown before they can be placed again, so having two of the same type lets you place that tower more quickly. The more important reason is that you can customize them with perk crystals.

Each tower or skill has five crystal slots, and individual crystals provide various perks. These include increased attack speed and power, reduced placement cost, or elemental effects such as freeze or fire. There is a limited supply of crystals, so you cannot boost everything equally, but you can use the same crystals on the same tower to stack their effects.

Each stage is a basic grid of tiles that allows you to place towers wherever you want. Naturally, you will want to position them around the heart tile, which needs protection because the stage fails if it is destroyed, or near enemy entry points. The enemies are simple geometric shapes of various sizes and are not particularly visually interesting.

The goal is to survive for a few minutes and destroy everything that appears. This is fairly easy at the beginning because you can do a lot with basic arrow towers that use crystals to lower their cost, allowing you to place many of them right away. One important difference is that you do not gain resources from enemies, so you also need to set up a few production towers to generate currency. It is smart to enhance these with production crystals to increase currency generation even further. Before long, you will have an army of arrow towers protecting the heart.

The fun comes from synergies that allow you to combine towers. All possible combinations are listed in the main menu, so you may need to memorize the most effective ones. In addition to greatly boosting their stats, combined towers also merge all attached crystals. For example, if you combine two towers with five attack speed crystals each, the result will have ten of those crystals.

There are ten chapters with five stages each, and you can play any stage right from the start. There is no speed up button, and stages do not indicate how long you need to survive, so you simply defend until you receive a message that you are done, which happens when the stage music stops. Overall, the game is quite casual, especially if you use a crystal that boosts all stats. With five of these in an arrow tower, it becomes very cheap, extremely powerful, and capable of taking out most enemies with homing projectiles.
