The gameplay is roughly what you'd expect. Just like setting soldiers up as a kid, and that's cool.
Thing is, you don't control your troops once you kick off the battle, at all. You have a toggle switch that you use when you're placing units, that is set to either 'offense' (walk towards the enemy base) or 'defense' (stand and wait). Now this is when you're PLACING units. So don't put your units down and then hit the toggle switch.
So there's one button. That's it. And it's buggy. After the first wave of enemy troops is wiped out, you get to rebuild and add more troops and so on. Then the second wave kicks off, where you get all of the troops from the first wave, you kill them all, then another wave of troops shows up without a break on your end. When the second wave hits, all of your troops default to 'offense', walk all over your fortifications, crushing them, and proceed to get shot to pieces.
Ordinarily I wouldn't be this bothered over a bug. But there's only ONE BUTTON AND TWO SETTINGS FOR IT. That's all you can do strategically as a player. So how does that not work right?
It's like, guys, you had one job.
AFAIK Wooden Battles is not in early access. So if even something that basic doesn't work properly, that you can uncover in 5 minutes of play, then what other issues are waiting for me? And how much effort will be made to fix them, given the game is complete? I don't know, but I'm not paying money to find out.
****EDIT****
I came back here to respond to some fanboy, but since reading the review page again I want to add that I think there's something fishy going on with the reviews here.
Look at all the positive reviews before 12/29. Pretty much all of them are saying negative things about the game, but giving a thumbs up anyway. Even the fanboy attacking me clearly had no ammunition. Before, I thought this was just another game that didn't make the cut, but now it looks like someone is being sketchy.
Even if you ignore my review, don't buy this game because of an overall positive rating. It's not trustworthy. Watch a let's play or two first.
