Grow Defense

Grow Defense is a tower-defense idle game where you upgrade your castle and unlock skills and weapons to fight monsters across multiple zones. You'll collect rare item drops and legendary gear from raid bosses to enhance your defenses. The core appeal is straightforward progression and loot collection, though players note the visual presentation feels dated and some late-game systems lack clarity.

What players are saying
Can't say I'd recommend this game to anyone I know.
I was moderately enjoying this one until I started digging into the Mastery portion of the growth. The game is very simplistic, to the point that it really does not make clear what things actually do. Does missile damage affect rocket damage? Probably, but I certainly couldn't find anything that said it did. The simple nature of the game makes it very simple to leave sitting in the background while you do other things, checking and applying growth as you go.
I was well over 100 hours into the game (I don't think it counts offline time in my playtime total; I would leave this running in offline mode while playing my Steam Deck in another room quite often) when I encountered the issue that instantly soured me. I was already put off by the high cost of the accessory slots, which basically required you to spend money if you wanted to progress (thousands of gems were required for each one, with each new one more expensive than the last), but the killer was Mastery. You earn Mastery once enough level points are invested into either lasers or archers (the game doesn't tell you this; you either need to sink 100 points into one basket early to learn this, ignoring all other possible upgrades, or spend even longer than I did playing the game). Every 100 points, you get a Mastery point and each mastery has 3 levels. Each Mastery level has 3 effects tied to them, with the final having a bonus effect. The problem with this? 7 of the 10 effects are locked off by premium currency (gems).
That alone isn't the issue. The effects are powerful, and the cost itself isn't astronomical. To get each of of the first set of abilities costs roughly 100 gems (I'm not sure on the exact amount, as I have already uninstalled the game and don't plan to reinstall just to check). You get a free gem every time you level up (including leveling up after a prestige), so that doesn't seem too bad, and there is a very small chance you will get a gem as you kill things. I believe the abilities get more expensive with each Mastery level, and the final, capstone ability costs 300 gems to get (which is problematic in its own right). The issue, however, is that every time your prestige and regain the Mastery levels, you have to spend the gems again. Any game that requires you to continually spend premium currency on the same unlock you already got is an issue.
As soon as I discovered this, I shut down and uninstalled the game. I felt slapped in the face. I already need to grind for hours on end to earn enough money and experience to regain my Mastery levels, and now you are going to tell me I need to keep paying premium currency to unlock them again? Especially since I need to bank gems for the absurdly expensive accessory slots? No, thank you. I feel gross having supported the game now with a purchase, now that I know this.
Avoid this one. It's not worth the time investment.
