War Tortoise blends incremental mechanics with active gameplay, tasking you with commanding a mobile base while managing upgrades, equipment, and a roster of recruited heroes. The game layers exploration, combat, and prestige-style progression across its systems, though players report frustration with opaque mechanics and heavy reliance on randomized loot. Best suited for fans of Foursaken Media's previous titles or players tolerant of grinding against unfavorable odds.

Foursaken Media, finally coming to steam!

For those that don't know, Foursaken Media has been producing mobile games for many years already, with games like the bug heroes series and Heroes & Castles 1/2. War Tortoise was originally launched on mobile but is now here. All of these games hold a special place in my heart!

Instant buy for their first steam title, and 1h in (so far) the port doesn't dissapoint!

I regret buying this, mostly because it is a FUN game. But the documentation is god awfull. You only get a tutorial about things once, so you better be paying attention and taking notes.

do things stack? Maybe. How do they stack? No clue. Join their discord to get answers, to the most basic of questions because there isnt any information to be found? It's dead or you just get ignored. What are tool tips for if you arent going to put anything in it?

I think being in the discord and the first thing you see is one of the moderators having the substatus of "No, I dont care." is good mood setter for what you are in for with this game, and how you will be treated. Either figure it out on your own, or dont figure it out at all, lol.

Sadly, before I realized it I was already past the two hour mark. I am gonna keep playing, and hopefully figure it out on my own, and guess ill take screenshots of every tutorial I come across.

For starters, this game is way overpriced for what you get. Second - got lots of bugs and issues that are more painfull to deal with the more you go.

The biggest issue with this game is RNG. The whole game is build around it and... the rng is bad. What means bad? that if you roll number 1-10, you will never see roll of 6+ and the average will be around 3 (rather below than above).

there is equipment to buy to improve your turtle... but it is random. so basically first you roll wich type of equipment you got (main cannon, sub cannon, shield, turret and so on), next is rarity and power.... add to it bad RNG and... it turn out rather useles.

after ascending you got mutations, wich not only are rather weak, they are also randomized, sumarize that and you realize your ascention are a joke.

equipment.... each got stats, and power. That means stats are how the power is distributed. or rather it should be, but it is not. basically you have no idea from the stats if the new piece of equipment is better or worse than the one you got.

skills... funny thing... each unit can have some skills that you can unlock, to unlock second you need to unlock first nad so on. does not sounds bad unless... unless you have no idea what the skills will do. You only got skill name. Is it worth investing points in previous skills? are there some better and some other worse? wich to prioritise? no info at all.

one if the biggest "game features" are the fixes that devs do. always fixing half way or messing something else making the whole fix defect.
examples:
*there was bug with auto play. It reseted constantly on / of during your death / ascention / starting new game.
it was fixed but not the camera, so basically you need to switch the auto battle off and on to reset the camera. so not much "improvement" here.
*for unknown reasons auto buy feature does not buy cheapest upgrades but random ones (did i mentioned that RNG is bad in this game?). Devs added the option to buy cheapest but... messed war supplies so it only goes to your turtle leaving your troops wery weakned without boost. so again it is but it is useles....

next is offline progres. the game does amazng job at it. althou there is offline progress it is meaningless. you earn money based on wave of monsters. and that means that if you play and beat couple of waves you will earn more than you wil earin after several hours offline.

Aug 6, 2025 - Hotfixes for the ui bugs, workaround for the terrain bug

Fixed an issue where parts of the ui would get cut off or hidden when anti-aliasing was enabled and resolution was anything other than the max setting Fixed an issue where textures would load totally wrong when running in windowed mode NOTE: the terrain still has a visual graphical glitch if you have shadows set to "off" or "low". To bypass the bug, change shadow setting to "medium" or above.

Added steam achievements Major randomization rework and improvementsTLDR - improved randomization mechanics, making random abilities occur much more reliably. Previously, the game used a "true randomization" system - this created some annoying situations where what you would see over time did not always line up with the perceived chances - while technically "correct" - and thats the nature of statistics, it could be frustrating. We added various "pity mechanics" to make sure for example a 10% chance is much more reliable - you will get (at least) a 1 in 10 draw of that thing, no matter what. Various other improvements generally make it so what you expect to happen when you think "20% chance" is more likely to be what you see happen, with more reliable passive ability, evolution, and ability triggers. Specific unit stats and war supplies can now be enabled/disabled for quickspend in order to fully customize how to auto spend your money Units should now attack targets they are suited for and distribute damage rather than ganging up in targets, creating a much more reliable distribution of damage. Added a list of all locations (sorted by tiers, with a collapsible header per tier) and their status (road built, outpost built, building icon if applicable, level x/y, and distance from current position) when on the map panel and not selected on a location. This allows you to see a much better overview of your world progress. Added new graphics options (anti-aliasing) and adjusted existing ones (soft shadows low/med/high are greatly improved) Fish bones and adventure coins show up in merchants for a cost in gems, allowing you to purchase relics and artifacts without having to play these modes if you don't want to (albeit at a slower rate). Added option for auto move to prioritize moving to new locations or to increase capture level of nearby locations Fixed some minor steam deck issues Implemented a variety of graphics optimizations - overall performance should be improved V...
