Edit: I am fully willing to eat crow on this review. Thanks to the developer for the insight on how the word list was obtained. I'm only leaving the original text of the review for larger context.

Knowing that the list was pulled from an actual list instead of some AI generated list pulled off some random website is extremely helpful, even if Google could not, for the life of it, figure out what I was trying to search for.

I'll move my review from Not Recommended to Recommended, with that further information. My only caveat is that, as mentioned in my initial review, some of the words that may pop up are extremely uncommon, so when you're trying to combo specific words together.

I like the look and the style, and I hope once the game makes it to 1.0, the dev has gotten the chance to expand on this nifty little concept.

Recommend if you like word puzzles and if you can get around the little bit of weirdness with some of the words.

--------------

I've had this on my wishlist for a bit, and I was really looking forward to having another word game on my Steam Deck.

Played the demo a bit back during one of the Steam Next Fests. I didn't notice anything then, but I probably would have just written it off as the sort of jank you'd see in a demo. Not indicative of the final product, you know?

I have no idea what dictionary they are pulling words from with this game. I've had words like "dub," "zzz," "byad," "ewt," "togt," and "hie."

Now, a couple of them, you can understand. Dub, zzz, etc.

But I cannot, for the life of me, understand where the "word" "togt" comes from.

Initially, I suspected that maybe the devs were not stationed out of a native English language country, which would explain it. I mean, it would make it tough for me, as a person who speaks English almost exclusively, but I could at least get why that would happen.

But once I started looking into the devs, I found a note that they're based out of the US. So what the heck happened here?

I have a weird suspicion, and I want it abundantly clear, I have no concrete evidence to confirm this is what happened. It's a hunch and I do not endorse anyone buying or avoiding this purely on this hunch. Look into it, play the demo, and then make your mind up.

But I have a hunch that the dictionary might be pulling from some kind of AI generated list of words.

The reason is this: Looking into the developer, I see they've made a board game previously. Looking at the website for this board game (Runes of Zen,) and the card art is extremely AI generated looking. All of them have that kind of AI generated style (almost wispy, I could describe them as,) and buildings on the cards gave nonsensical windows and designs that wouldn't make sense if they were drawn by hand.

The game does list only two developers, and as far as a game concept, I think it's really nifty. But I also would guess that the developers used some kind of an AI generated list of four letter words, after having seen their board game art.

Again, I have no concrete evidence to support this, and I encourage people to play the demo and make their own decisions.

However, if the words are nonsensical, it makes it nearly impossible to really plan out lining up certain words to make certain combinations of higher scoring words.

Regardless if AI was involved or not, that is my main issue. It only took me one game to notice these nonexistent words.

My genuine hope is that this issue, regardless of where it came from, gets resolved by the time 1.0 comes out. The game ran fine on my Steam Deck, and I do really enjoy the core idea here. If the issues get resolved, I'd be happy to check it out again, because these kinds of games excel on the Steam Deck.

Lots of refinements in this release. Special thanks to players for your feedback! Dictionary Added word rarity! Now you can change the game's dictionary to have more or less obscure words. We now default to "Rare" which is about in the middle of the range. So you'll notice less weird words that are only competitive-level "Scrabble" words. Check the game's Settings menu to adjust. This opens up a lot of accessibility and replay value to the game and we hope you enjoy the change! A found word list is available after each game. It breaks down how many words you found in each level of rarity (from common through mythic). It makes it easier to sort out some of the more interesting words you found to help you remember them and possibly look up their definitions. Added some clarification as to how we build our dictionary was added to the Credits menu. Basically, we start with an open source version of the international "Scrabble" dictionary. That's where a lot of the weird words (now mostly in Epic and Mythic dictionary levels) come from. Unlocks We simplified unlocking new presets for Chill and Rave modes. You only have to play the first of each game mode to unlock the rest. Also, and this is important for Chill games, you don't have to complete the game to unlock, just play them. This means if you end your game using the pause menu, it will still count. We realized that the point of the unlocks isn't to hold you back, but to encourage you to try simpler presets first. We hope this is a better experience. User Interface We clarified a lot of navigation text (eg. Back in many places tells you exactly what you're going back to) We made UI labels easier to see and added visual queues for things like rotating the board (you will notice the board now rotates as it counts down to start each game) Hover text has been added to the settings menu and game preset customization to clarify what each of the options does We added fun bubbles in the background because fun The settings me...
