Staying true to its claims of being minimalist, Lint is a very simple clicker/idle game where your goal is to collect lint, upgrade your lint production, and "turn tiny dust balls into an unstoppable fluff empire." The longer you idle, the more lint you accumulate. The more upgrades you purchase, the more your Lint Production per Second (LPS) increases, and the quicker your "fluff empire" grows.
There are 4 upgrade options to increase lint production, including: cursors, dryer sheets, vacuums, & laundry baskets. Each upgrade increases LPS additively at fixed amounts, despite the cost of upgrades increasing with each purchase of that upgrade type. Cursors add +0.1 LPS per upgrade; Dryer Sheets add +1.0 LPS per upgrade; Vacuums add +8.0 LPS per upgrade; Laundry Baskets add +47.0 LPS per upgrade.
Primarily being an idle game focused on passive gains, clicking the lint ball doesn't feel meaningful in terms of "growing your lint empire." Upgrades (which are additive, not multiplicative) apply to LPS only, and there is no way to increase the productivity of your individual manual clicks. The positive aspect of clicking, however, comes in the form of a weird sense of cathartic amusement as little lint balls fly off of the larger lint ball when clicked. Unfortunately, aside from spawning little lint balls, the larger AI-generated lint ball doesn't evolve or change visually — despite collecting & spending lint.
Accompanying the silliness of "growing a lint collection" & little lint balls flying on screen is a set of cheekily titled achievements (such as "Big Mistake" earned when launching the game). The developer clearly has a sense of humor that translates well through multiple aspects of the game, which is promising for the future of Lint should they expand the content further.
Ultimately, it's unclear whether the simplicity of the game's production mechanics is a nod to the developer's goal for minimalism or if it's the result of a seemingly unfinished product. Adding to the suspicion of the latter is the inclusion of an inventory system, which presently lacks any value or purpose. Thus, the game was either released in an unfinished state or presumably the developer intends to add additional content (or potentially Steam inventory items which will be visible in-game).
In summary, Lint is a conceptually cute, casual, simple & silly game that — with a bit of TLC — has the potential to be a fun idler.
