Desktop Reptiles puts a customizable leopard gecko habitat on your desktop, where you gradually unlock enclosure upgrades, decorative items, and new terrarium layouts through idle progression. The game prioritizes relaxation over challenge, letting you tend to your pet's needs and expand their space during work breaks or while away. It's ideal for players seeking a low-stress, ambient experience that rewards gentle engagement rather than active grinding.

Bought this as something to leave running beside my work instead of as a traditional management game. In that role it works pretty well. The small desktop enclosure stays out of the way, and I can open the full view when the gecko needs feeding or when I want to change the layout. The built-in focus timer is unexpectedly useful and also gives the progression a reason to exist.
One thing buyers should know is that this is not an offline idle game. Closing it does not generate money or continue the gecko’s growth. Most progress comes from keeping the enclosure running, completing care milestones and using the focus timer. That suits how I use it, but people expecting to check in once a day and collect a large pile of offline rewards may find it slow.
The UI takes a little time to learn, but the actual care loop is relaxed and never becomes stressful.

Very cozy and surprisingly relaxing. The animations could still use some polish, but the gecko already has a lot of personality.

I expected a cute animated gecko and not much else, but there is a decent little enclosure system underneath it. Heat placement matters, the water and feeding dishes need to be reachable, and the gecko actually uses hides, slate and branches rather than treating everything as background decoration.
It is still a small game. There is only one reptile species and the shop could definitely use more items, especially if decorating is your main reason for buying it. What is here feels coherent though, and I have enjoyed checking what the gecko is doing between other games.

This update adds a few useful settings and interface controls, while also fixing an issue that could make the game difficult to operate after selecting an oversized window resolution.Additions and AdjustmentsYou can now rename your gecko at any time from the Age card in the Status panel.Added an option to switch between Celsius and Fahrenheit. Update 1.0.2

This small update focuses on reducing stutters and fixing achievement issues, mainly around the shop, view transitions, and behavior observations.ImprovementsOptimized the shop’s initial opening and category switching to reduce stutters caused by loading item cards and substrate resources at once.Improved transitions between Desktop Mode and the full vivarium view, reducing window jumps and long stalls.Adjusted reflection handling on Windows to make transitions into the vivarium view more stable.Reduced unnecessary calculations when the gecko searches for a climbable observation spot, lowering the chance of brief stutters in complex enclosures.Reduced background scene processing while the shop is open, helping shop interactions stay smoother.FixesFixed an issue where seeing the gecko drink for the first time did not trigger the “Tiny Tongue, First Sip” milestone, its rewards, or the corresponding Steam achievement.Fixed hiding and sleeping inside a hide not being recorded as observed behaviors, which prevented their observation rewards and corresponding Steam achievements from unlocking.

Update 1.0.1

This update fixes Steam achievements and cleans up a few display issues in the shop panel.* Fixed achievements not unlocking — the previous build was missing the files the game needs to talk to Steam. After updating, any progress already in your save will automatically unlock its achievements the next time you start the game, so you won't need to earn them again.* Reworked the shop card layout: the image, name, and price now always stay fully visible, and longer descriptions scroll inside the card instead of stretching it past the panel.* Hovering over a description lets the mouse wheel scroll just the text; anywhere else, the wheel still flips through the shelf as before.* Scrolling while the shop is open no longer zooms the enclosure view behind it.* If you play at a higher UI scale, the shop panel now grows a little taller so more of each description fits — and when there still isn't room, hovering over a card shows the full text.
