Indie Dev Story puts you in the role of a newly independent game developer managing your basic needs while juggling tasks to complete your first title. The game strips away strategic design choices, focusing instead on resource management and task switching rather than actual development decisions. It's a lightweight simulation that may appeal to players seeking a casual, low-stakes take on the dev life, though those expecting meaningful game design mechanics will find it shallow.

Indie Dev Story tries to ride the wave of the game development simulation genre, but it doesn’t quite make it to shore. If you’ve played 'Game Dev Tycoon' or any other similar titles, this game will feel like a bland rerun rather than something fresh or exciting.

From the start, Indie Dev Story wears its inspirations on its sleeve, almost to a fault. While it’s understandable to take cues from successful predecessors, this game doesn’t manage to build upon those ideas in any meaningful way. Instead, it recycles the same formula without adding anything innovative, which makes it hard to see the point of its existence. The gameplay is straightforward to the point of being boring, with no real depth or strategy required. You just go through the motions, selecting options that feel more like chores than engaging decisions.

Moreover, the execution is rough around the edges. The interface is clunky and doesn’t offer much in the way of feedback or interaction that makes you feel involved in the process. It's almost like playing an alpha build rather than a finished game. The game lacks polish, and it’s obvious in the way the systems work—or don’t work, in some cases. Bugs and glitches pop up here and there, adding to the frustration rather than the challenge.

In the current gaming landscape, which is flooded with simulators and tycoon games, Indie Dev Story fails to distinguish itself. There’s a noticeable lack of personality, and even the narrative, which should have been a strong point, given that it’s supposedly inspired by the developer's own experiences, falls flat.

While it’s free, which is always appreciated, it still doesn't justify the time investment. There’s potential here, but it’s buried under uninspired mechanics and rough execution. If you’re looking for something new and exciting in the game dev simulation genre, I’d suggest looking elsewhere. Indie Dev Story is just another clone, and not a very good one at that.

Fun game, almost feel like tutorial should be avoided as struggling through it gets you more feeling like its an indie game xD

Built a great game, got a 9/10 as "no inverted controls" D=

Here's my review after playing for a little while and collecting all of the achievements:

I've played a fair amount of games in the genre that I expected this game to be in, so I was a little underwhelmed by the game-play.

The entire game is just managing your needs and switching between tasks. There are no game dev based decisions, aside from the title that you give to the game in the beginning.

There are two main strategies: click like mad, or buy a bunch of stuff, and click like mad some more.

It's definetely a type of clicker game, without the prolonged timeframe of most clicker games. The game starts and ends within a few minutes. It's not that the game is awful, it's just that there isn't much to it at all.

That being said, the soft shading and voxel art style has it's own kind of vibe that I don't hate, and it did feel a little bit satisfying to unlock new perks.

It's clear the developer is talented, and I look forward to seeing what they might come up with in the future, even though this game missed the mark for me in particular.

Indie Dev Story - Patch V1.4 Released!

Hey all, It's been great to see people playing and having fun! I appreciate all the feedback and for letting me know about the bugs you have been encountering. I've just released a patch (V1.4) to address these bugs as well as adding some quality-of-life additions. Achievement Unlocking Fix: The main reason for this patch was to resolve a problem with achievements sometimes not unlocking. There was basically a timing issue causing the unlocking to sometimes not get triggered. With all my testing I'm pretty sure I sorted it out now. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/45081596/5b5b54c097266f294dc3f3de3b689e0277ed7341.gif Here are the patch notes in full: {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/45081596/bd8f321cc1c6a276795c57401e5fd0d2d6936e4e.png Fixes for Steam Achievements sometimes not unlocking Made it so the 'Release A Terrible Game' achievement unlocks if you get an end score of 10% or less now - The achievement says 10% but before it would only trigger if you got 9% or less, leading to confusion Fixed the character being able to fall out of the rooms Increased Auto-clicker detection threshold amount - This was triggering for some people who were not using an auto-clicker (People can legitimately click a lot faster than I imagined ha) {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/45081596/3c0dbe295c115893708330233280c0fed91140e3.png Added a settings screen to the main menu and in-game exit menu - You can now independently set the volumes for Music, Clicking and General Gameplay. I also added a low graphics quality option Can now access the How To Play screen from the in-game exit menu Added a helper popup which will show if the player doesn't click for a period of time when first starting a game - To help people who don't realise that the game is a clicker and how to play (saw this issue on a persons Twitch stream) Updated the launch splash screen to be of a higher quality Updated the localisation Made misc texts shorter to better fit in the UI Enjoy!
