Indie Dev Story tries to ride the wave of the game development simulation genre, but it doesn’t quite make it to shore. If you’ve played 'Game Dev Tycoon' or any other similar titles, this game will feel like a bland rerun rather than something fresh or exciting.
From the start, Indie Dev Story wears its inspirations on its sleeve, almost to a fault. While it’s understandable to take cues from successful predecessors, this game doesn’t manage to build upon those ideas in any meaningful way. Instead, it recycles the same formula without adding anything innovative, which makes it hard to see the point of its existence. The gameplay is straightforward to the point of being boring, with no real depth or strategy required. You just go through the motions, selecting options that feel more like chores than engaging decisions.
Moreover, the execution is rough around the edges. The interface is clunky and doesn’t offer much in the way of feedback or interaction that makes you feel involved in the process. It's almost like playing an alpha build rather than a finished game. The game lacks polish, and it’s obvious in the way the systems work—or don’t work, in some cases. Bugs and glitches pop up here and there, adding to the frustration rather than the challenge.
In the current gaming landscape, which is flooded with simulators and tycoon games, Indie Dev Story fails to distinguish itself. There’s a noticeable lack of personality, and even the narrative, which should have been a strong point, given that it’s supposedly inspired by the developer's own experiences, falls flat.
While it’s free, which is always appreciated, it still doesn't justify the time investment. There’s potential here, but it’s buried under uninspired mechanics and rough execution. If you’re looking for something new and exciting in the game dev simulation genre, I’d suggest looking elsewhere. Indie Dev Story is just another clone, and not a very good one at that.
