It should be noted that there are two Catnip Studios on Steam. They are probably the one and the same but one is spelled with a minuscule S while the other has the S letter in uppercase version. I played and reviewed Cats of the Tang Dynasty first which "only" has 200 cats on a scroll.
Cats in the Ancient City of Gu Su was released some weeks before that but it is a bigger game with its 6 areas and overall 600 cats. For some strange reason achievements are given only till you find 500 cats and for the rest nothing (it is as if they didn't want to add more than a total of 100 achievements per game).
But it's fine, these games are characterised by their relaxing gameplay and amazing drawings. Just look at the pictures! You can zoom in which is a must if you want to find everybody. A hint function is also available and it only has a cooldown - no achievement punishment here.
The game is fun to play - it has atmospheric music and moderately chonky cats. There is a counter at the bottom of the screen and once you find a cat a chubby paw quickly appears to ensure the current number is a smaller one. Taking away numbers like taking in food!
Great series! You can find more information on the scroll painting used here:
