Cats of the Tang Dynasty is a hidden-object game that tasks you with spotting felines scattered across vibrant paintings depicting moments from ancient Chinese imperial life, specifically the historical romance between Emperor Xuanzong and Consort Yang. The colorful artwork and thematic setting distinguish it from typical monochrome HOG entries, though the core loop remains finding all the cats—some obvious, others cleverly concealed—across a compact handful of levels. Best suited for fans of casual hidden-object games who appreciate historical context and gentle puzzle-solving.

Of the many cat-based HOG out there this one seems to be a new take on the genre as it does not give us a black-and-white artwork but rather something colourful that also tells an ancient story. If you are interested in it you can read more on the story of Yang Guifei here:

It is easy to find all the cats as some of them are very chonky and the hint function helps. In every 60 seconds this is available and does not affect the achievements. What I like about the game is that it looks like an ancient scroll that you can easily scroll (pun intended) and some sections of the landscape do not even contain a lot of cats but rather just art for you to marvel at.

This a cheap and relaxing HOG. Recommended if you can still keep up with the cat-based HOG invasion on Steam.

Definitely a must-have for any fan of mini-hogs :D

The beautiful artwork in this series really sets these games apart from every other similar game out there. Only 2 levels, which is fewer than in the previous games, but I think it still feels like a steal for around a buck. I noticed that the cats seemed to be a bit more hidden in this with for instance just a head visible, which makes them blend in and feel more like a part of the actual scene. But still very much a casual hidden object game that won't leave you scratching your head with frustration. Cats actually LOOK like cats and not some weird shape that makes you go "Hmm is that supposed to be a cat???". :)

This game was nothing new to what I usually play, that is Hidden Object with Cats. However, it was something completely new to what I am used to: a painting that illustrates moments, both royal and mundane, from the Tang dynasty. I believe this is Ancient China (correct me if I'm wrong). At first I thought it was Korea and I was looking for the Pheonix with three pairs of legs (Kingdom of Goguryeo) - silly me.

PROS:
- Authentic painting illustrating moments from the Tang dynasty;
- Up to about 300 cats to find;
- The authentic music brings you to that era;
- Easy to learn mechanics.

NEUTRE:
- When starting the game for the first time, you see on the Main Menu two levels that have 111/111 and 124/124. That means you have 111 and 124 cats to find. When you reach 0/111 and 0/124, you found them all.
- When completing a level, a rewind button appears in the same place where the counter was at. If you clicked it by mistake (which I have), you will have to redo the level.

CONS:
- No congratulation at the end to tell the player that they have found all the cats of that level.

What inspired me was the painting and the music. I think you'll be inspired too.
