Fishing The Abyss strips away progression systems and stats to create a meditative observation experience. You watch a small robot automatically catch deep-sea creatures in a vertical window that sits unobtrusively on your desktop, building an ecosystem of oddities at your own pace. Ideal for those seeking ambient gameplay without grinding or pressure, though the creature encyclopedia remains sparse in early access.

Okay so this game DOES have potential. It is early days yet. I am not saying don't get it, but rather do not get it YET.

For starters-the encyclopedia for all the fish you catch? Totally blank, no actual names, nothing. This is the first major problem for this type of game. You HAVE to give people something to collect in what is effectively a creature collector game. This-isn't there yet. At all.

#2; they need some serious help with the English language translation. it is not so broken as to be unintelligible but it is very rough translations and it shows. Hopefully they can find some folks to help with this.

As to the other currently missing things:

No achievements. this may take time, and doesn't effect game play but given how many idle/clicker games have achievements it is a bit sad to see no achievements.

Now, i intend to keep on following this game for a bit and let you know if there are any timely updates that fix the 2 most glaring issues I see.

To the developer: The Encyclopedia is a major, MAJOR issue because it really is the only thing remotely like a reason for the game, the heart and soul of why your robot is sitting out there fishing the abyss int he first place. So for now: give it a pass UNTIL the Encyclopedia is actually functional with names, weights/lengths, and details for each fish. Right now there is the same outline as you see when fishing and that is all.

Please make this the priority for future releases. if this is resolved, i will update this review and switching it from a no to a yes on recommendations but right now it seems like this early release is well, a bit too early even for a early release. Thanks in advance for taking the time to read and consider.

04/02/2025 Update: there has been ZERO improvement to the encyclopedia, which is really the heart if this game as a 'creature collector' Idle game. sorry but until i see an actual major improvement to the Encyclopedia, i am going to have to say you still give this a pass and try it out only when the Devs put in some effort into the actual meat of this idle game (IE, encyclopedia descriptions and images).

Hopefully they will, but as their last patch was a minor bug fix months ago, I am no longer holding out any real hope here. Maybe they are just time constrained, but the more likely reason is a cheap cash grab they are not putting in any real effort into. I would love to hope they are a good Dev just doing this solo and it is taking them some time, as hey it happens - but the odds are not great as we have seen on many another Steam game.

Time will tell which it is, and again i would love to see this fleshed out but I wouldn't pin too many hopes on it at this point. I hope to be proven wrong.

Looked like a game with a dark atmosphere at first sight,
it turned out to be a super cozy game.
What a great mix, love it!

Also love the idea of a small, vertical game window which is perfect for an idle game...most of these games only run in full screen/big windows. I'm not surprised tho; the dev seem very supportive and rly cares about the players suggestions and wishes.

Games and devs like this deserve much more attention & love! <3

Just a friendly deranged robot dredging the pelagic deep in a ceaseless quest for biomass..

This is an experience more than a game, and in a sense it is more of a companionable artwork than anything else, and I love it. The premise is simple. You are observing a peculiar little robot fishing at the edge of an abyss with its rudimentary fishing rod. After a while, strange marine animals gather around the peculiar bait, lured in by the patience of the mechanical explorator.

The fishing grants you points which lets you upgrade the length of the line, the sinking and reeling factors and your capacity, and this is more or less the length of interactivity you have. You can click on the line while it descends/ascends to speed it up, but I never really bothered with that since the showcase is meditative as it is. You also have a logbook cataloging all the strange catches as well as giving you hints of the beasts you have yet to encounter in your fishing.

As “idle games” goes, this is more idle than actual gameplay, however the environment, the atmosphere and the overall feeling is spot on. I love the verticality of the fishing where you find weirder and weirder creatures as your line sinks even further down into the hadopelagic zone.. If you consider it more of a meditative tool for getting into the zone while doing arts and crafts or light writing it is near perfect in its peculiar oddity. In short, this game is a perfect companion for those lonely days when you are compiling data for your upcoming ecology project.

Conclusion: This gaming experience/work of art or whatever you choose to call it really resonates with me, and I would recommend it if you are intrigued by the thought of a serene fishing companion that grants you a slight escape from your everyday life. It most certainly is not for everyone however, and be mindful that this is not much of a game per se (as clearly stated on the store page). However, for a slightly mad deep sea enthusiast, this is a perfect match.
