Horripilant is an idle incremental dungeon crawler where you descend through a dark underworld, gradually gaining power to challenge and defeat a god. The game combines the passive progression typical of the genre with atmospheric gothic aesthetics and a darkly absurd premise that rewards patience and grinding through mechanically familiar but thematically distinct gameplay.

I bought this based on the setting and theme. The art is cool, and the GUI is aesthetically pleasing. However, the animations are lacking, and boss enemies are just recolored regular enemies, which are both disappointing.

There's also not a lot of enemy variety at this point. Look, another rat. Now a crow. A skeleton, you say? How daring.

The game itself feels like a demo. It starts out way too slow, and hasn't introduced any interesting mechanics yet. It's the boilerplate incremental loop of:
Do main activity (fight in dungeon) while secondary activity (harvest materials) runs in the background.
Spend currencies on temporary upgrades.
Prestige to earn currency to get permanent upgrades via a skill tree.

It doesn't seem to be much more than that. There are mysteries to uncover, but unless something interesting happens soon I won't be sticking around long enough to solve them. I'm concerned that the slow progress is hiding a lack of content. I will continue playing for a couple more hours in the hopes I am proven wrong, but based on the initial experience I can't recommend this game.

Disclaimer: I worked on the Polish translation for this game but did so for free and I bought the game with my own money. I spent many more hours playing a pre-release build while testing translations.

Horripilant is a very nice twist on the incremental/clicker genre that mechanically doesn't stray too much from its roots while also aiming for something unique with its atmosphere. It's an engaging incremental with a fair bit of clicking if you'd rather wait less. The mood is very nice, in a horror way.
The game also features some point-and-click style puzzles that don't get overly difficult.

All in all - I've enjoyed playing it a lot and my only real criticism is that it's the kind of incremental game that I'd normally prefer playing on my phone as there is a fair bit of idling. Mechanically, that is, the atmosphere wouldn't work there. i think most fans of the genre will enjoy the game.

Version 1.4 is now LIVEHey y'all! Been a bit since the last update so I thought I'd let you guys in on what we've been working on. I've been pushing back this update for a bit now since it's pretty small all things considered, and I really wanted to include the new Godot 4.7 feature where I could ignore controller inputs when tabbed out. And while 4.7 is getting here soon, we've also got interesting Steam Sale events coming up and so I wanted to patch some stuff for newcomers to get the best experience coming the game. Worry not though, controller inputs being ignored is coming as soon as Godot 4.7 releases. We're working on something VERY neat for the community, update 1.5 which will have some very very cool things! That's probably going to be the last content addition to the game as it's pretty content complete. But definitely look out for it.We've also been working on console and mobile ports, keep an eye out for those. DirectX12 now available!

Hello!I've updated the launch options on windows to include a new launch option: DirectX12.We've had a handful of reports of people lagging after long play sessions in the base game, and we believe it was probably caused by Vulkan implicit layers breaking from faulty software like recording software, eg: old versions of OBS, Steam Recording, clipping software like SteelSeriesGG, Medal, etc..If you are playing on Windows and are experiencing lags after long play sessions, give this new launch option a try! If you lag a bit at the start - it's probably shaders compiling, give it a minute.A new small patch is coming soon as well! Thanks for playing.Alex
