Toffee Cats is a minimalist yet irresistibly charming puzzle game in the vein of the Flow / Numberlinks series. Its objective is simple: fill the grid by connecting each cat's head to its matching tail, ensuring that no paths cross or overlap. As you progress, the puzzles grow in complexity, introducing larger grids and new types of cats to connect.

Toffee Cats offers 900 relaxing levels, divided into seven categories based on their difficulty. However, compared to the traditional Flow-style games, even the hardest levels here remain very approachable and take only mere seconds to solve.

A design choice that I always appreciate in these games is having the levels crafted so that all paths are straightforward, without needing to awkwardly twist connections just to fill the board. The levels in Toffee Cats are exactly like that, which is very refreshing. Additionally, the progress is saved for any unfinished level, allowing you to come back later and continue solving it. It's also possible to have multiple levels in progress.

The visuals are undeniably adorable. Each cat's head and tail are linked not only by color but also by matching clothing items or accessories. Connecting them triggers a delightfully cute purring sound and a little smile from them, adding to the game's cozy, lighthearted atmosphere. Some tiles, represented by cats lounging in boxes in various poses, act as blockers on the grid. Their purpose is not only cosmetic, but their presence on the grid also directs the player on how to best build the required connections.

As a longtime fan of Flow-style puzzles, I truly appreciate Toffee Cats for its clean, lovable design and accessible gameplay. It strikes a sweet balance between simplicity and fun, making it a must-try for puzzle enthusiasts and casual gamers alike.

A first look of the first four levels of every difficulty:

What a purr-fect cozy little puzzle adventure this was. And fair enough, the impossible level isn’t hard, but that’s the thing I like about it. For once, something is not overly challenging—just a lovely, cozy, relaxing time-waster that made me feel like I was wrapped in a warm blanket on a rainy day, along with a nice hot cup of coffee and not a care in the world.

In this puzzle game, you collect cat heads with the matching cat bum. Heh. And I think it’s lovely once they’re connected, their face changes a little. It’s a small detail, but it caught my eye.
It's lovely how they are all a little different; to me, it makes me feel like they all have their unique personality - nerdy, sassy, plain, war-chasing mouse cat, etc. Fun!
From beginner to impossible, they’re all very solvable. As I stated above, not even impossible is as impossible as I was holding my heart for. And that just felt nice. I played through the whole game, relaxing with a few podcasts of scary stories on the side, filling up every little nod, connecting every little kitty cat head to the butt. This one also seems perfect for all ages.

It has a beautiful, playful, and fun hand-drawn art style, which appealed to me personally. The music was also rather entertaining and uplifting. However, as I am, I... I swapped it out for my horror stories podcast, as my brain needs a little more input and stimulation than the lovely game sounds. The only point of critique I have here is that, when connecting the cats, it sounded more like a seal of some sort than a cat purring. So, that wasn’t my favourite.
I’ve also noticed that the SFX and sound cannot be adjusted separately. It’s either gotten rid of both or neither. Which wasn’t an issue for me, but it’s something I did notice.

I also loved the touch; there is a dark theme and a light theme. I’ll always prefer dark themes as they’re less straining for my eyes. So that really made me like the game even more. The cats are fun and colourful in their way. I, however, did miss having a sphynx cat in there, but that’s just because I want to be a butt. I own three of those babies, so always if I see there is none I’m offended *wink wink* (don’t take that too seriously, I’m not offended lol)

So, would I recommend this? I want to scream yes. It’s cute, it’s wholesome, it’s meow-velous and super chill to play. But if you’re looking for a really challenging one, then no. Fortunately, I wasn’t looking for a challenge, but rather a good time without having to cry over not being able to solve it. And in the end, I was sad all my levels were done, but it also left me smiling and happy that I played it out. And perhaps we see another great game by this duo, which is something to look forward to.

What is it: A simple numberlink game with a cat theme. Numberlinks require you to draw lines connecting pairs of numbers, with the restrictions that lines cannot intersect, and the entire grid must be covered in lines. And this is just that, no extra mechanics, except that instead of abstract lines, you must connect cat heads with their corresponding cat bottoms.

Numberlinks are a fun little time waster, and I enjoy them when they're well done. And while this isn't bad, it doesn't live up to the high bar that I’ve come to expect, in terms of usability. While the cats are cute, they aren't very easy to distinguish, with many shades of gray and beige. There are some solitary cats playing the role of walls, and they also look a lot like regular cats, and many times I wasted several seconds wondering why I can’t connect to this cat head, only to realize that it’s a whole cat and not the head that I’m looking for. This isn't necessarily bad though, since it can be seen as an extra challenge on top of the basic numberlink.

One usability thing I’ve grown used to is the option to not erase existing lines when drawing a new line. As an expert player, I don’t make mistakes, so once I draw a line, I never want to just draw over it, but the game forces me to slow down and carefully trace paths without going over. At least the broken path is not completely lost, if I move back out of it, it will be reinstated.

Still, if you're looking for a cute numberlink and like cats, this is good enough.

How hard is it: Easy, ★☆☆☆☆. Even the difficulty called “Impossible” is just bigger grids.

How long is it: 950 levels, from 5x5 to 12x12, 6-12 hours. All chapters are unlocked from the start, but levels in a chapter must be solved in order.

Level design: Mostly OK, with a few exceptions they have unique solutions, but I did encounter several levels that have a second solution that involves idle looping to cover the grid because the unintended solution was shorter.

Quality: Good. Undo, but only the last move. Mid-level saving. Decent level select. Works with a mouse, with the keyboard used only for shortcuts (undo, restart, next, back…), but it also works with a controller as a slow way to move the mouse pointer. A few settings, audio, full screen toggle, dark mode, language. While the dark mode is welcome, it would benefit from a more visually-impaired-friendly way to identify cats. Cloud saving, progress achievements. Small, fast and responsive.

Worth the price: Yes.

Most positive aspect for me: I like numberlinks.

Most negative aspect for me: No option to not break existing lines when drawing.

What would make it better: Unlimited undo. Make sure all levels have unique solutions. Keyboard and better controller support. Better accessibility, like adding (optional) letters on top of the cats. An option to not break existing lines. Daily or weekly random levels, or just a random level generator. Harder levels.

Also consider:

LYNE, a much harder kind of numberlink in which you need to pass multiple times through each node.

Trans Neuronica, a much harder kind of numberlink in which you need to draw and redraw paths repeatedly to unlock parts of the level.
