I think this project has a lot of potential, but as it stands right now there are some problems.
- Readability: The map is mostly boxes and circles. This is an early access title and I understand the constraints that come with that. I am really glad to see a functioning game that went with true placeholders in lieu of something like AI art. I'd be more than happy to donate to this project specifically to aid in procuring art for the project. For me, it is not a deal breaker but it is noticeable.
- Speed: The game is really slow. Painstakingly so at times. I'd love the option to speed things up.
- Boons: I think this is the single coolest part of the game right now. As the apostle fights, you gain loot. You take the things the apostle loots, sacrifice them, and gain boons from a pool based on the items you have sacrificed. The fact that the sacrificed items help your curate what boons you get is awesome. The problem is that you don't know what stats you will get before sacrificing an item. Then you have to remember what stat it gave moving forward. I think, presently, there is also a missed opportunity to really have the different affinities play differently. The buffs provided by mercy and death do contrast now, but they are mostly stat changes or abilities to be used in combat. These boons could be real gameplay modifications that shift how you interact with the world and your apostle. Imagine a boon that gave you the ability to graft parts onto you apostle from creatures they killed or something like that. It is an awesome system, and I think when it is fully fleshed out it would be amazing.
- UI: There is a lot of information I'd like to have on screen at once. I think making a UI that the user can customize would do wonders. Let me break sections out, move them around. This would really, really help cut down on all the clicking you have to do when looking at your character.
I think this is a really awesome project and a steal for 3$. Right now, it is a lot of promise, but with solid development time I think it could be a game worth far more. I can't wait to see how the developer shapes this project. It is already awesome, with a few tweaks it could be a genuine gem.
Updated: I achieved apotheosis for the first time and became the God of War. I am not sure what triggered it, I achieved it at about level 8. I'm gonna test it out some more. It definitely grows on you. Great second monitor game. I think it could be a main monitor game with boons being used to integrate more active gameplay, like with active abilities but perhaps more god game-esque later down the line. The slowness is also growing on me. You feel for the guy. Excited to see more.
