Cast n Chill strips down fishing to its essence: cast your line, catch fish, and gradually upgrade your equipment across peaceful waters. The game prioritizes atmosphere and relaxation over complexity, making it accessible for players seeking a low-pressure way to unwind rather than chase progression goals.

About this game

What players are saying

▲ Recommended 5 hrs
My recently widowed 55yr Mother-in-Law, a couple of weeks ago, received a diagnosis of around a 10% 90-day mortality rate.
She’s been wanting to go fishing while she can, but she has a lot of fatigue and concerns that make that difficult or impossible.

I’ve been waiting for this game for her since seeing its demo. I bought it as soon as I saw it was available, figuring it would be good at least on the go for long Dr appointments or upcoming hospital stays. She’s also been taking a liking to our house cats — She said she’d have loved a Maine ♥♥♥♥ if she could have had one in her life. I saw the supporter DLC and had to have it for her (I usually don’t grab stuff like this, but the coincidence made it impossible to pass up).

She’s absolutely loved it. She hasn’t played games in decades, since Mario brothers. It’s really helping her mind’s sharpness. She’s been so happy and excited with all of the different fishing options, fish types, the pretty pixel art that she’s never really seen before. It’s gorgeous art and day/night cycles, too! (I haven’t played that much myself for a review from me personally).

She’s gonna be playing more soon! She’s hooked (ha-ha). The dev(s) have made her so very happy with this product. Thank you.
The memories made here are priceless, and the starting value (with initial discount) an incredible deal.

Review after near-100% completion – Score: 5/10

(One remaining task for full completion)

This is not a guide. It is a player review aimed at both the community and the developer. My intention is constructive criticism and encouragement. The game shows potential, and there is a foundation to build on.

Core Experience
Atmosphere and Presentation

The strongest aspect of the game is its visual and audio identity. The graphics are beautiful, calm, and detailed. The soundscape is soft and restrained, reinforcing the peaceful fishing mood. Small moments, like when a fish breaks the surface or when you finally reel it in, are well executed.

Accessibility and Controls

The game is easy to understand from the start. The mechanics are intuitive and accessible. Both mouse and keyboard work naturally together, and the controls never get in the way.

Gameplay, Difficulty, and Tension

The game is relaxing and simple to learn, but also very easy to complete. For players looking for challenge, unpredictability, or progression depth, the current design may feel too light. It becomes more of a checklist than excitement and unexpected anticipation and struggle.

Underwater View and Loss of Mystery

The ability to look under the water removes a significant amount of tension. When you see exactly what is down there, fishing becomes a predictable “aim and retrieve” action rather than an experience built on anticipation.

When fishing from the surface camera, the occasional jump of a fish breaking through the water is a wonderful moment. Without the underwater camera, this detail would become even more meaningful. The underwater view reduces the sense of discovery and undermines the surface-level atmosphere.

Progression and Economy Imbalance

The in-game economy is too basic. It is straightforward to buy everything in the shop long before the game asks you to complete important tasks. Once everything is purchased, money loses all meaning. This removes progression tension and undermines long-term motivation.

Boat System and Lack of Impact

Boats are visually appealing but have little practical impact on fishing mechanics. Different models do not significantly change strategy, risk, or access to new areas. They feel more like cosmetic swaps than systems connected to gameplay decisions.

Suggestions for Future Development
Make the World More Dynamic
Seasons and weather

Introduce seasonal and weather changes that influence fish behavior. Spring, summer, autumn, and winter could each create unique fishing opportunities. Weather conditions like strong winds, heavy rain, snow, fog, or thunderstorms could affect bite rates, boat control, and travel speed. This adds unpredictability and encourages adaptation.

Terrain accessibility through boat upgrades

Let boats determine where the player can travel. Larger or more advanced boats could access deep water, offshore zones, remote islands, or hidden coves. Progression becomes tied to exploration rather than only shop purchases.

Deepen Boat Mechanics and Upgrades
Boat impact on fishing

Small boats could tilt, drift, or get dragged away when hooking larger fish. Bigger boats could offer stability but come with slower travel or higher cost. This introduces meaningful gameplay choices and tension.

Practical equipment and utilities

Expand the toolset available on the boat. Examples include sonar, echo sounders, limited underwater windows, radios for hints or weather updates, and drones for scouting.

Add classic fishing tools such as nets, hooks, or bells. A landing net could secure large fish near the surface. Different hooks could affect which fish are attracted. A bell on the rod could signal unexpected bites. These items would strengthen the feeling of operating a real fishing vessel.

Give the Dog and Player More Character
Dog behavior

The dog could sleep, nap, bark, react to weather, jump in the water, or show excitement during big catches. Feeding the dog fish could trigger animations or sound reactions. These interactions add life and personality.

Naming options

Allowing the player to name the boat and the dog increases emotional attachment and personal identity.

Player actions

Whistling, toggling a radio, or reacting to weather could deepen immersion without complicating controls.

Emergent Events and Surprises

Unexpected events can make each session unique. Sudden weather shifts, lightning strikes, radio broadcasts with rumors or location tips, birds attempting to steal caught fish, fishing lines snapping, or the dog jumping into the water all create opportunities for surprise. These events also support creative achievements and new story moments.

Social Layer and NPC Interaction

Introduce NPC fishermen in nearby boats or along the shore. They can comment on bait, weather, or locations. The player can cooperate, share advice, mislead them, or fish side-by-side. Even minimal interactions add a sense of community and variety.

Progression, Economy, and Late-Game Purpose

Stretching out the economy and introducing high-cost optional upgrades would prevent early saturation. Rare fish, event-based requirements, and cosmetic customizations can keep money relevant throughout the game.

Cosmetic options for rods, boats, colors, or the dog’s appearance provide progression without disrupting balance.

Conclusion

My final rating is 5 out of 10. This reflects the game in its current form, not its potential. The game has excellent atmosphere, beautiful art direction, and intuitive controls. However, it lacks depth in progression, tension, and long-term engagement.

With expanded world dynamics, deeper boat mechanics, meaningful upgrades, richer interactions, and improved progression balance, this game could evolve into something truly memorable. The foundation is strong, and there are many promising paths forward.
