I also made a longer, more in-depth video review here: https://youtu.be/PAPVwUjsqPo
TV Kid is an extremely underrated roguelike that was created by the YouTuber, Streamer, Musician, and now game developer Aztrosist. It is a game that manages to combine a clicker game and a roguelike in an amazing package that has so much charm. So in TV Kid you play as someone flipping through channels on a tv and you have to defeat an enemy on every single channel. And you do this by clicking on the enemy to deal damage to them. However when you deal damage to an enemy they deal some damage back depending on their damage stat. And so you keep clicking on the enemy until you either kill the enemy or the enemy kills you and ends your run. And at its core TV Kid is all about stats. As you can see on the left side of the screen you have so many different stats. You have your health, shields, damage, defense, coins, and your chance to dodge, crit, or get a devil deal. And most of these stats are pretty self explanatory. And before you click off the video thinking that a game mainly based on stats couldn’t be fun that’s where the endless item combinations come in play. So every single time you kill an enemy and move on to the next tv channel you get an item room that offers you on of three different items. And these could be basic things like a b-ball bat that gives you +1 damage, or some socks that give you a 50% chance to gain +2 defense or they can be really crazy and rare items like one that gives you some shield every time you kill an enemy or one that multiplies your damage every time you skip an item room. And also there are so many different synergizes and categories that the items fall in. So there are 3 basic animal items. There is a cat, a rat, and a dog. If you pick up one of these say for example the dog, it makes all future dogs you pick up give you 1 extra damage but all future cats and rats give you one less damage. So it makes you pick one animal to kind of go for and then there's items that remove all of the dogs or cats or rats from the item pool so you can make sure you only get offered the ones you want. And there are so many items that interact with each other or do cool things. There's a kunai that gains more damage the more times you pass it up so if you skip it a couple times and then pick it it will give you a ton of damage. There's an item called spikes that multiplies your damage by a lot but hurts you for like 25% of your health. But there's an item called boots that all it does is it says if you pick the spikes item you wont lose any health. And this is where the game really shines. Because yes overall the game is just about stats and clicking on enemies is obviously not the most thrilling gameplay ever but the strategy involved with deciding what items and item synergies to go for is really fun. And the game is pretty hard at first. Your first couple games you will probably die before you even get to the 10th or 15th enemy but you will slowly learn what items you should go for and you can start discovering some insane combos that absolutely break the game. Also after every 10 channels you go to a shop that allows you to spend coins you get on items like health potions or items that give you basic stats or multiply your basic stats. And there is also a small chance that you will instead go to a devil deal instead of the shop depending on your devil deal chance. And these will offer you powerful items in exchange for a lot of your maximum health. And there are some incredible powers you can get from the devil deal like greed that turns your damage stat to always mirror your money. Or one that heals you when you kill enemies. And your main objective is to get to channel 50 and defeat the TV Kid. So when your coming up with your strategy you not only have to make sure you can defeat enemies easily but you also need to make sure you can sustain a longer fight with the boss. If you win the fight that's technically the end but you can play in endless mode to see how far you can get and that's pretty fun because the game gets hard really fast. Though I do really wish there was a leaderboard or at least a record of your own personal high score for each character in the character selection screen. And the only form of progression in the game currently is to unlock new characters. And you do this by beating the game 10 times on the first character to unlock the second. When you get 10 wins with the second character you unlock the third and so on. I do wish there was a bit more progression in the game because i’m glad there is something to work towards but I really really think this game could use some sort of item unlock system. Each update this game gets adds new items but they are unlocked immediately. I really think there should be achievements in the game that unlock new items and there should be a place to see all your unlocks almost like the checklist page in binding of isaac. The game also has an incredible amount of charm and personality. The artstyle is obviously pixel based and it reminds me a lot of undertale and I have a huge soft spot for that game so i really love that about this game. Also some of the items you get add cosmetics to your game so like there is a rare body pillow item in the game that gives you a huge damage multiplier but the meme is that you now have a body pillow behind your tv for the rest of the run. Also say you get a ton of cats in a game you might get a cat that sits on your tv. I really love these attentions to detail and I absolutely think more items should do this. The music in the game is an absolute banger but I do believe there is only one track. I think if there was just a couple more tracks all in the same style it would up the quality immensely for me but either way I absolutely vibe with the one track. And so overall if you are someone that loves the synergies and combos you can get in roguelikes you will absolutely love this game because that is 100% the focus of this game. It is all about making broken combos with the endless amount of combos you can get and I absolutely love it for that. It is in early access and there are constant updates adding new items and things and I overall just cant wait to see how it turns out. What players are saying
This game is really fun, the aesthetic is awesome and soundtrack is amazing, great game Aztrosist.
Fun timewaster clicker game, but definetely not worth 10 dollars yet, even for early access. If you're a fan of Aztrosist, I would reccomend it. When the game becomes more balanced, I would say to buy it, but the more they nerf shop items and stat multipliers, the more impossible runs you're going to end up with. You can tell there's some binding of isaac type game influences. The problem is that those games also come with a sense of mechanical skill which can help you turn the odds in an unfavorable run. This game doesn't have any of that. When you get into a fight, you click until either the beast on screen dies, or you die and then have to restart. Items lack proper description for what they do much of the time. This is a drawn out review that I only planned to be one sentence long. Overall, 10 dollars just isn't what this game is worth to me at this point in development. Love you Aztro <3 wish you and your game luck
